On October 9, 2013, Kennesaw State will celebrate a momentous milestone in the university’s history: the 50th anniversary of the approval of the institution’s charter by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.

In recognition of the University’s first 50 years, a myriad of campus and community organizations are collaborating to sponsor a week-long series of events during Founders Week, slated for October 7-11, 2013.

Historical Milestones


Following the Founders Week festivities, Kennesaw State officials are planning to mark several additional milestones in the University’s history, which will expand the commemorative activities over a four-year period slated to culminate in 2017. These key events marked Kennesaw State’s establishment:

OCTOBER 9, 1963
Founders Day: Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia charters a new junior college in Cobb County
APRIL 22, 1964
Bond referendum approved for the college’s construction
NOVEMBER 18, 1964
Groundbreaking held on the site of the current campus
AUGUST 11, 1965
Board of Regents names Kennesaw Junior College
SEPTEMBER 26, 1966
First classes held at Southern Technical Institute
JANUARY 9, 1967
First classes held at Kennesaw Junior College
JUNE 9, 1967
First Commencement held at Kennesaw Junior College
