Q. What is the difference between Professional Learning Units (PLU)
and Staff Development Units (SDU)?
A. The Georgia Professional Standards Commission has changed
the name of the required units for teaching certificate renewal from
Staff Development Units (SDU) to Professional Learning Units (PLU). There
is no difference between SDUs and PLUs.
Q. How many PLUs do I need?
A. In the State of Georgia, teachers are required to complete 10 PLUs
every 5 years in order to retain their teaching certificates. If you
are obtaining an alternative certification, please check with the Georgia
Professional Standards Commission (GAPSC) to find out what your
PLU requirements may be.
Do I need to fill out any paperwork before I come to class?
If you are currently teaching, you must complete the Prior Approval
form found here before
you begin your course. It is the responsibility of the student to maintain
a record of prior approval for a course. Please print out the form,
have your supervisor sign it, and keep it for your records.
Q. What do I do if I am not currently teaching or do not yet have
my certificate?
A. If you are not presently employed as a teacher or do not yet have
your teaching certificate, you do not need to complete the prior approval
form. You must, however, keep your PLU course completion form.
When you are ready
to renew your teaching certificate, attach your PLU course completion
forms to your renewal application (found here).

A. Students taking an online course must fill out an electronic affidavit
prior to receiving their completion form. To speed up the process,
make sure that you fill out the notification
form once you have registered
for your course. Please contact the online program coordinator at
