Approved Undergraduate Policies and Curriculum Committee Recommendations
These approvals will be reflected in the 2006-2007 Undergraduate Catalog; copies are on file in the Office of Academic Affairs and the Horace W. Sturgis Library.
College of Humanities and Social Sciences
• Change in prerequisites for numerous courses in the College of Science and Mathematics. The change in prerequisites will only impact those courses required of majors within the College of Science and Mathematics, or majors in programs requiring a substantial science background (e.g., Middle Grades Education, Nursing) and are not intended to impact students taking CSM courses in fulfillment of general education requirements. The proposal changes the prerequisite of College and Science and Mathematics courses to require a grade of “C” or better in prerequisite course(s).
The College of Science and Mathematics prerequisite change document includes all of the proposed courses .
• Biochemistry major - BTEC 3301 Introduction to Biotechnology replaces BIOL 4415 under Supporting Disciplines.
• Major in Chemistry (Professional Chemistry Track) removes footnote 2 “Students planning graduate study in chemistry should choose, in the appropriate electives areas, CHEM 3700, and three hours of CHEM 4100. Courses in computer science and additional courses in mathematics and physics are recommended”. Due to increase enrollment and more frequent offering of upper level chemistry electives, footnote 2 is no longer needed.
• Certificate in Forensic Chemistry adds BTEC 4100 Molecular Methods DNA, and CHEM 3398 Forensic Chemistry Internship or CHEM 4100 Direct Applied Research (on a Forensic-Related Topic) and deletes BIOL 4415 DNA Technology.
• Major in Chemistry (Forensic Chemistry Track) removes BIOL 2107 Biological Principles I and adds CHEM 2100/L Forensic Chemistry from lower division major requirements; deletes the 5 hour Internship Forensic Chemistry Internship and adds a 3 hour Internship Forensic Chemistry Internship or 3 hour CHEM 4100 Direct Applied Research and a 2 hour upper level elective any 3000/4000 level chemistry, biology, or biotechnology course to the upper level division major requirements; deletes BIOL 4415 DNA Technology, BIOL 4490 Forensic DNA Analysis, ANTH 4490 Forensic Anthropology, and Electives, and adds BTEC 4100 Molecular Methods DNA or BTEC 4800 Forensic Diagnostics Infectious Agents or ANTH 3302 Forensic Anthropology to the supporting disciplines.
• Major in Chemistry (Chemistry Education Track) removes CHEM 3105L Inorganic Synthesis Lab and adds CHEM 3110L Bioinorganic Chemistry Lab to upper divisions major requirements.
• Major in Computer Science adds options of CHEM 3361 and CHEM 3361L or BIOL 3300 or PHYS 3340 to give students more flexibility. Previously students were required to take PHYS 3340.
