SUBJECT: Final Actions from Spring 2005 of the Undergraduate Policies and Curriculum Committee, the Graduate Policies and Curriculum Committee, and the Senate

APPROVED UNDERGRADUATE POLICIES AND CURRICULUM COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS:
These approvals will be reflected in the 2005-2006 Undergraduate Catalog; copies are on file in the Office of Academic Affairs and the Horace W. Sturgis Library.

University College

• The Board of Regents approved KSU’s request to give the Undergraduate and University Studies administrative unit the new name “University College”.
• The new KSU 1101 or KSU 1102 requirement states “All first-year full-time students entering Kennesaw State University with fewer than 15 semester hours are required to take KSU 1101 or KSU 1102. This requirement must be satisfied during the students first term of enrollment at Kennesaw State University. Biology 2101 is an approved alternative to KSU 1101”.
  

College of the Arts

• Music department adds clarifying statements for all music degrees with regards to admission/readmission policies, progression/retention policies, placement, continuity of study, and student teaching.
• TPS 1513 Contemporary Theatre Arts and TPS 2193 Introduction to Performance are changed to TPS 1500 Introduction to Theatre Studies and TPS 1600 Introduction to Performance Studies to better reflect their role as the two foundational courses for the major in Theatre and Performance Studies. See “Undergraduate Course Changes” for specific changes to these two courses.
  

Coles College of Business

• MATH 1111 or MATH 1113 are added as General Education requirements for all business
  majors. The addition of these requirements will provide better preparation for calculus (which business majors are required to take) and for the quantitative courses.
  

Bagwell College of Education

• Changes in Middle Grades teaching field requirements for language arts program strengthens the preparation for middle grades language arts teachers. The changes provide a choice in the courses taken, provide an integration of grammar into the teaching of writing, and reduce redundancy in the program.
• Secondary English Education major makes several changes to the program including a decrease of 3 hours to ENED 4414; two new courses (ENED 4415 and ENGL 3310); addition of three courses offered as choices under the “Upper Level Core Requirements, Cultural Study of Literature” (ENGL 3500, ENGL 3600, and ENGL 4401); the deletion of EDSM 4409 from the program; and the addition of EDSM 4401 to the program.
• Math Education major makes the following changes to recommendations for guided electives in Area F: (1) MAED 4416-hours decreased from 9 hours to 6 hours--moving 3-hour field experience to a new course (MAED 4417); 2) MAED 4417 new 3-hour stand-alone course for field component previously housed in MAED 4416; 3) MAED 3475 new 3-hour course added to the Mathematics Education program.
• Health and Physical Education (P-12) program adds HPS 1070 Basketball/Softball as an additional option to the movement courses.
  

Wellstar College of Health and Human Services

• Human Services major replaces ANTH 3310 or SOCI 3314 with HS 3350 Culture and Poverty as an upper division major requirement.
• Sport Management major requires the following admission/readmission and progression/retention policy: “An AGPA of 2.75 will be required for admission to the program. Once admitted to the program, students must maintain an AGPA of 2.75 until completion of their degree”.
• Sport Management makes several changes to their major including the addition of three new courses HPS 2222 -Sport Information; HPS 3777-Economics of Sport; and HPS 3888-Budget and Finance in Sport. To accommodate these additional courses, ECON 2100 and MGT 3100 were deleted from the program (however, all sport management majors must take ECON 2100 in the General Education Core). In addition, 3 hours were taken from free electives. These changes better serve the students as well as develop the program in order to meet NASPE/NASM program approval.
• Sport Management (Sport Communication Concentration) now requires the student take: HPS 3333, COM 3310, COM 1135, COM 3330, and COM 3335.
  

College of Humanities and Social Sciences

• Communication major adds one 3-credit hour lower division required course and deletes one 3-credit hour upper division major elective course. COM 2235 Research Methods course is changed to COM 4435 so that the number of hours and distribution of hours remains the same over lower and upper division courses.
• Criminal Justice major replaces SSRM 2301 with CRJU 2301 as a lower division major requirement.
• History major adds new course HIST 4435-History and Memory to list of course options in American History and Culture Concentration. History of Ideas Concentration adds three courses: HIST 3310-The Old South; HIST 4412-The Early Republic; and HIST 4415-Jacksonian America.
  

College of Science and Mathematics

• Biology major makes the following changes: 1) Remove MATH 1107 (Elementary Statistics) and replace it with MATH 2107 (Biostatistics) as a requirement for the B.S. in Biology; 2) Make PHYS 1112 (Introductory Physics II) or 2212 (Principles of PHYS II) a required course rather than a Related Studies elective; 3) Delete COM 4405 (Organizational Publications) as a Related Studies elective.
• Biotechnology major makes the following changes: 1) Remove MATH 1107 (Elementary Statistics) as an Area F requirement and replace it with MATH 2107 (Biostatistics) as a requirement for the B.S. in Biotechnology; 2) Make Physics 1112 (Introductory Physics II) or 2212 (Principles of Physics II) a required course rather than an elective.
• Computer Science major adds CSIS 4610-Human-Computer Interface, CSIS 4520-Web Applications with Java, and CSIS 4580-Web Services with Java to the major electives list. In addition CSIS 4560-Distributed Objects Technology and CSIS 4130-Parallel and Distributed Architecture and Algorithms are discontinued.
• Information Systems major adds CSIS 4610-Human Computer Interface and CSIS 4305-Web Systems Development to the Non-Business electives. In addition, ISA 3350, CSIS 4210, and CSIS 3150 are removed from the major.
  
  Undergraduate Certificate Programs

• History certificate program makes changes to provide a decrease in the number of required courses and an increase in suggested course sequences. This change provides the students an opportunity to choose areas in which they would like to concentrate their efforts, such as historic preservation, museum studies, or cultural programming.
• Electronic Business Systems certificate program replaces IT 4525-Electronic Commerce with CSIS 4305-Web Systems Development as a required course. In addition, ISA 3100, CSIS 4310, and CSIS 4575 are added as electives and CSIS 4500 is removed as an elective.
• Information Security and Assurance certificate is revised and now requires a 12-hour core (4 courses) ISA 3100, ISA 3200, ISA 3300, and ISA 4330. In addition a 3-hour elective course is selected from ISA 3350, CRJU 3320, CSIS 3550, CSIS 4510, CSIS 4515, ISA 3398, or ISA 3396.

  Minor Programs

• A minor in Dance is being offered by the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies.
• A revision to the minor in French and Francophone Studies includes new courses that are part of the new B.A. in Modern Language and Culture.
• A revision to the minor in Spanish reflects the new courses that are part of the new B.A. in Modern Language and Culture program.
• Business minors (Accounting, Business Law, Management and Entrepreneurship, Operations and Purchasing, Marketing and Professional Sales) increase the required credit hours from 12 to 15.

Master of Accounting (MAcc) Program
The Master of Accounting (MAccc) is revised to strengthen the overall accounting content in the program in order to ultimately benefit the profession. The reduction in required credit hours from 36 to30 will also make the program more competitive with others in the area that are currently 30 hours in length.

Master of Applied Computer Science (MSACS) Program
The revisions to the Master of Science in Applied Computer Science premium-priced cohort program for experienced professionals come from two sources:
1. The changing computing technology and opportunities to broaden the MSACS program to include coverage of additional applied computing knowledge areas, this enhancing recruiting efforts and program attractiveness.
2. Minor changes to enhance the foundation of entering students.
The new and optional knowledge areas (BIO-MED and Digital Game Design) are the most interesting aspects of the program revisions. They are intended to increase interest and enrollment by better servicing a wider audience of students including those who seek advanced knowledge and unique technical specializations in interesting new applied specializations within computer science.

Master of Educational Leadership
The Educational Leadership graduate program adds a concentration in Educational Technology Leadership. This concentration will be offered in fall 2005.

M.Ed. in Adolescent Education
The M.Ed. in Adolescent Education program makes revisions to its program including the addition of EDUC 7705 (Assessment and Evaluation) as a program requirement as well as reorganization of required ENGL courses in the English/Language Arts concentration. In addition, balance between content and education is now at 18 hours each eliminating the Cognate Area (elective) hours. Finally, changes in the numbering of several mathematics courses reflect changes to course changes by the Mathematics Department.

FINAL ACTIONS ON RECOMMENDATIONS FOR UNIVERSITY SENATE ACTIONS-Spring 2005:
The following Senate recommendations have been improved for implementation. These changes will be included in the latest edition of the KSU Faculty Handbook and/or university catalogs.

• Tenure and Promotion Oversight Committee recommends the following changes to Section Five of the Faculty Handbook:
  1. At the end of the last paragraph on page 5.30, add: “E-mail is not a confidential medium”
  2. To a paragraph repeated in three places: p. 5.25, p. 5.27, and p. 5.29, after “When there is a conflict of interest…on that case.” add: “Disputes regarding whether a committee member has a conflict of interest may be discussed with the KSU Ombuds. If adjudication is required, the case will be referred to the T&P Oversight Committee, who will make a binding determination in the case. Members of the Oversight Committee who are in line to review the case (Chair of the relevant College Committee, Chair of the University Committee, and any others) will be recused from this process.”
  3. P. 5.25, add:
  “7) When the department chair is going up for review, the Department T&P Committee considering the chair’s case will consist entirely of tenured faculty. (This may or may not be the same committee considering other Departmental T&P cases.) If a department has too few (fewer than 3) tenured members to constitute such a subset, the department should elect tenured faculty from another department to serve on their Department T&P Committee.”
  
• Grade Appeal Procedures and Student Administrative Withdrawals and Grievance Procedures are rewritten/revised. These revisions are included in the 2005-06 university catalogs.
