MEMORANDUM

TO:   	Faculty, Staff and Students
FROM: Betty L. Siegel, President
SUBJ: Final Actions from mid Sprng 2002 of the Undergraduate Policies and
Curriculum Committee the Graduate Policies and Curriculum Committee.

APPROVED UNDERGRADUATE POLICIES AND CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
RECOMMENDATIONS:
These approvals will be reflected in the 2002-2003 Undergraduate Catalog;
copies are on file in the Office Academic Affairs and the Horace W. Sturgis
Library.

*Change in Existing Policy*
The KSU certificate program policy is changed by deleting the following: "To
qualify for a certificate at least 12 credit hours earned for the certificate
program must be non-duplicate beyond the credit hours required for the students
major." The rest of the policy remains the same.

*New Undergraduate Programs*
The Board of Regents approved the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in
its January 2002 meeting.

*Change in Degree and Program Requirements*

School of the Arts
> The three degrees in music add applied concentrations. Faculty is now in
place to provide additional applied concentration offerings in the music
    degree programs.
> A renumbering of the instrument techniques classes is made in the Music
    Education program. MUED 3360 becomes MUED 3351, 3352, 3353, 3357, 3361,
    3362, 3363, 3365, 3366, 3367. The cost of teaching instrument
techniques on a Ôone-to-oneÕ basis is prohibitive at this state of
    development of the music department.
> B.A. in Theater adds a musical theater track. The addition of this track
    will:
     - make the major more appealing in recruiting
     - attract another type of student not currently majoring in the theater
       degree program
     - provide additional courses that will boost the enrollment in theater
       courses
     - develop a higher profile for the department in the academic marketplace
     - fulfill the request for such a track from a growing number of students

College of Humanities and Social Sciences
> The B.S. in Communication program establishes a gateway proposal requiring
a combined GPA of 2.5 in Public Speaking and Writing for Public
    Communication
> B.A. in English program adds new literature and writing courses into the
major. Three new writing courses are added under Writing and three new
literature courses are added under Studies in
    Literature Before 1800.

College of Science and Mathematics
> B.S. in Biology program makes a change to "Area F". The department is
replacing the requirement that students take CSIS 2300 with a new course
    BIOL 2101.
> The B.S. in Information Systems adds a new course CSIS 4575 Technology
Commercialization as an elective option under CSIS electives.

*New Certificate Program*
A certificate program is being offered in Mathematics of Computing designed for
students with an interest in the role of computing in applied mathematics. This
certificate program emphasizes the algorithms, methods, and models (graphical
and otherwise) used to find complex mathematical solutions through extensive
computing.

*New Minor Program*
The School of the Arts is offering a minor program in Music.
