DECISION SCIENCES (DSC)

DSC 205. Business Information Systems and Communication Fundamentals. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: business majors: All developmental studies courses if required; non-business majors: All developmental studies courses if required. This course is designed to (1) convey to the student basic information system concepts; (2) enhance the student’s oral and written communication skills; and (3) develop student proficiency in using business application software.

DSC 301. Management Information Systems. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: business majors: Admission to the Coles College of Business and MGT 360; non-business majors: MGT 360. Illustrates the variety of applications for, and benefits realized from, computer-based information systems in business. Examines technical, people and organizational issues in information systems planning, development, operation and control. Provides hands-on experience in developing a decision support system.

DSC 307. Advanced Business Application Systems. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: business majors: Admission to the Coles College of Business; non-business majors: 90 credit hours including Area IV of the Business core. A course which integrates the design and management of computer-based business application systems. The course surveys significant management-related issues regarding the use and deployment of information systems technology. Hands-on use of PC software packages, to include electronic spreadsheets and database management systems, is incorporated to apply concepts, methodologies and approaches that are introduced and discussed.

DSC 312. Business Statistics. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: business majors: Admission to the Coles College of Business; non-business majors: 90 credit hours including Area IV of the Business core. An introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics, including linear regression, with an emphasis on applications in business. Not for math majors.

DSC 380. Operations Management. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: business majors: Admission to the Coles College of Business; DSC 312; MGT 360; non-business majors: DSC 312; MGT 360. Generic modeling techniques are applied to the planning, operation and control of the production of goods and services. Topics include: quality control, facility location and layout, material requirements planning and project scheduling.

DSC 400. Directed Study. 1-5 credit hours. Prerequisite: business majors: Admission to the Coles College of Business and approval of instructor, major area committee and department chair prior to registration; non-business majors: Approval of instructor, major area committee and department chair prior to registration. This is a special topics course of an advanced nature which focuses on information systems subject areas not covered in regular course offerings.

DSC 470. Business Systems Analysis and Design. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: business majors: Admission to the Coles College of Business; DSC 301; DSC 307; non-business majors: DSC 301; DSC 307. A study of the tools, techniques and documentation methods for analyzing and designing business systems. The course has a student project involving the use of a Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tool and the development of a relational database model.

DSC 475. Business Decision Systems Modeling. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: business majors: Admission to the Coles College of Business; DSC 307, DSC 312; non-business majors: DSC 307; DSC 312. Designed to teach the student how to create, analyze and modify business oriented optimization and simulation models to aid in making management decisions. The decision support systems focus will be on higher level management applications.

DSC 490. Special Topics in Decision Sciences. 1-5 credit hours. Prerequisite: business majors: Admission to the Coles College of Business and approval of instructor and department chair; non-business majors: Approval of instructor and department chair. Selected topics of interest to faculty and students.
