
THTR 107. Approaches to Theater. 3-0-3. Prerequisite: None. A study of theater through reading, discussion and observation, from the point of view of the audience. Primarily for non-majors meeting the core fine arts requirement.
THTR 151. Contemporary Theater Arts. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: ENGL and READ 099 if required. An introduction to the field of theater, offering an overview of the discipline and profession for students considering a life and career in the theater.
THTR 161. Theater Practicum.* 0-2-1. Prerequisite: All developmental studies courses if required. Practical work in theater crafts, including lighting, costuming, set construction, box office procedures and other production elements.
THTR 271. Theater Production.* 1-4-3. Prerequisite: All developmental studies courses if required. Individually designated production and/or performance assignments, primarily in support of Classic TheaterWorks productions.
THTR 320. Principles of Acting. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: THTR 151 or permission of instructor. The theory and practice of the actor’s craft.
THTR 321. Acting for the Camera. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: THTR 320. An intermediate acting course applying acting techniques to the special demands of film and television.
THTR 322. Acting Technique for the Large Stage. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: THTR 320. An intermediate acting course applying acting craft to the demands of the large stage.
THTR 340. Play Analysis for Production. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: THTR 151. Textual analysis of playscripts, with an emphasis on the perspective of the practitioner of theater. A preparatory course for the history of theater and drama sequence.
THTR 381. Visual Imagination. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: 60 hours or permission of instructor. A course in the visual aspects of the art of theater that focuses on the principles, the elements and the history and current practice of visual design for the theater.
THTR 382. Design Skills. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: 60 hours or permission of instructor. Basic design principles applicable to all fields of theater design.
THTR 385. History of Costume and Decor. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: 60 hours or permission of instructor. A survey of historical dress, architecture, and furnishings as it relates to theater.
THTR 398. Internship. 1-15 credit hours. A supervised, credit-earning work experience of one academic quarter with a previously approved business firm, private agency or government agency. Credit is allowed only in elective areas.
THTR 400. Directed Study. 1-5 credit hours. Prerequisite: Approval of instructor, major area committee and department chair prior to registration. Selected topics of an advanced nature, which may include original research projects.
THTR 431. Directing. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: THTR 340. Studies in the fundamentals of stage directing. Theoretical studies will be augmented with the opportunity to direct selected scenes and to observe working directors.
THTR 451. Ancient and Medieval Theater and Drama. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: THTR 340. A history of the theater and its literature from its origins through the Medieval Period.
THTR 452. Renaissance to Romantic Theater and Drama. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: THTR 340. A history of the theater and its literature covering the Renaissance through the late 19th century.
THTR 453. Modern Theater and Drama. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: THTR 340. A history of the modern theater and its literature, from Ibsen to the present.
THTR 481. Scene Design. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: THTR 381. Techniques of stage design and scene painting.
THTR 482. Lighting Design for the Stage. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: THTR 381. Study of lighting design for the stage, including study of lighting instruments and control.
THTR 483. Costume Design. 5-0-5. Prerequisite: THTR 381. Study of principles of costume design for the stage.
THTR 490. Special Topics.* 1-5 credit hours. Prerequisite: Approval of instructor and departmental chair. Special interest courses offered on an irregular basis.
