Dr. Conte has 39 years of experience in a variety of operational areas in higher education, including 22 years as University Registrar at the University of Pittsburgh. He has done operational reviews of internal units at the University, as well as consulting at a number of institutions (large and small, public and private) in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. He has also taught workshops on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and on Project Management since 1986 to staff and faculty at the University, as well as to staff and managers from external organizations (including three presentations at a conference in London in late June 2007). He has been involved in, or served as leader of, numerous projects on campus that involved process mapping, benchmarking, training and development, organizational design, and strategic planning. He was the project team leader from 2003 to 2005 as the University of Pittsburgh implemented a new student information system; he concluded leading a project team that implemented an upgrade to the student information system at the University in May 2007; and, he is currently leading a project team that is in the process of implementing additional features of the system to all five campuses of the University.
He began his career working for the Housing Office at the University of Pittsburgh, moving on to other positions in areas such as Management Services, Student Business Services, and, finally, the Office of the University Registrar. His career as an educator includes previous adjunct faculty appointments at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he taught several administrative courses in their Criminal Justice program, and at the University of Pittsburgh’s College of Arts & Sciences, where he taught in the Freshman Studies program. He currently has an appointment as adjunct assistant professor in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh, in the Administrative and Policy Studies program.
He has served on, or chaired, various committees at the regional and national level, and has served as president of his regional association (Middle States Association of Collegiate Registrars and Officers of Admission). He is currently serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), as Vice President for Finance. He has presented papers on various topics (including Project Management, Mentoring, Collaborating with Faculty on Change, and Reengineering the Registration Process) at numerous regional and national conferences.
He holds a B.S. (Mathematics) from the University of Pittsburgh, an M.A. (Criminology with a concentration in Psychology) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. (Higher Education Administration) from the University of Pittsburgh.
