CAREER:
Through a stroke of good luck I was introduced to the wonderful world of college admissions as a recent NC State University graduate in the early 1970’s and went on to serve my alma mater for 30 years as an Assistant Director, Associate Director, Director of Admissions and Vice Provost for Enrollment Management. I retired from NC State with 30 years of service in 2002 and began consulting with the University of North Carolina system on state-wide college access issues and The College Board on the rollout of The New SAT. By today’s standards, staying at one institution for an entire career is practically unheard of but in the 1970’s, when I began my higher education career, it was much more the norm.

Career advancement and professional growth opportunities at NC State made it possible to both grow in the profession and gain broad exposure on national best practices through conferences, workshops, and extensive travel. As Director of Admissions I oversaw a staff of 30+ with an annual budget of $5M, and as the University’s first Vice Provost for Enrollment Management, I helped create and develop the Division of Enrollment Management and Services, which included the Admissions Office, the Registrar’s Office, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and the Division of Lifelong Education, with a total staff over 120 and a $15+M budget.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
My very first professional development experience was at CACRAO’s newcomer’s workshop in the summer of 1973. I went on the serve CACRAO for three decades in numerous committee and vice president roles and as president in 1993. One of my most rewarding experiences was helping create the CACRAO Educational Consultants program recognized by AACRAO as the best new program of the year and still going strong today. I both attended and have made over 100 presentations at other professional conferences including, SACRAO, AACRAO, NACAC, SACAC, The College Board Regional and National Forum’s, and the ACT Enrollment managers Annual Conference. Experiences such as The College Board’s Summer Institute which I both attended as a young professional and later served on its’ faculty, and international educational travel (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, England, Scotland, Wales, Japan, Korea, Guam, Okinawa, Canada, and Mexico) helped give abroad perspective to my work and helped keep a very high level of professional excitement and enthusiasm. Receiving a Fulbright Scholarship to Germany remains a professional highlight as does CACRAO’s highest recognition, The Award of Excellence for lifetime achievements in education.

EDUCATION:
BA in Economics, NC State University 1972
Masters in Public Administration (MPA), NC State University 1978
Doctor of Education (Ed D), NC State University 1986
