WHAT ARE THE APPLICATION AND DOCUMENT DEADLINES FOR THE 2009 FALL SEMESTER?
The deadline for submitting the application and supporting documents is February 6, 2009.
WHAT COURSES MAY I TAKE AS A JOINT ENROLLMENT STUDENT?
High school seniors may choose from a wide variety of English, math, social science, foreign language and economics courses. With high school counselor approval, JEHP students may choose to take not only those courses needed for high school graduation, but additional college courses that will provide a greater head start on college. Students may choose from regular KSU classes or honors sections, available in selected subjects. Students must complete college-prep requirements in math and foreign language at their their high schools before taking these subjects at KSU. Course options for high school juniors are more restrictive. Please see the Courses for JEHP Juniors section of this site for more information.
HOW MANY COURSES MAY I TAKE AS A JOINT ENROLLMENT STUDENT?
The student, parent(s) or guardian(s), and high school counselor determine the number of courses the student will take. JEHP seniors may choose to attend KSU part-time or full-time. High School juniors typically are limited to attending KSU part-time, until they meet state eligibility requirements for the full range of college courses. Full-time students take four or five courses per semester (12-17 credits hours), and typically do not attend their high schools at all. Those who earn 15 hours each semester will complete their entire freshman year of college before graduating from high school. Part-time students divide their time between 1-3 courses at KSU and courses at the high school. Note that some high schools require varsity athletes to take a minimum number of courses at the high school to maintain their athletic eligibility. The Georgia Board of Education requires that all students generate no fewer than 5 Carnegie units within a school year.
MUST JOINT ENROLLMENT STUDENTS TAKE ONLY DAY COURSES?
No. Joint Enrollment students have the flexibility to choose their own schedules, including morning, afternoon, evening and weekend classes. Most KSU classes meet either Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday for one hour and 15 minutes. A smaller number of classes that meet one day a week, including Friday only and Saturday only classes, are also available. Online courses are typically not recommended for JEHP students, as attending classes on a college campus is part of the JEHP experience designed to ease the transition to college.
ARE THERE SPECIAL HONORS CLASSES FOR JOINT ENROLLMENT STUDENTS?
Yes. Honors sections are offered in subjects in greatest demand by JEHP and undergraduate honors freshmen. These typically include first-year English courses, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Political Science, Economics, and some electives. Honors courses feature smaller class sizes and are taught by members of the Honors Faculty recognized for their outstanding teaching. We receive very positive feedback from JEHP students on our honors sections, and strongly encourage JEHP students to try at least one honors course. Honors classes are designated as such on students’ transcripts.
ATTENDANCE
Students participating in JEHP are subject to the same attendance policies as anyregularly enrolled student. Faculty members may have varying expectations regarding number of absences, tardies, and policies for late or missed work. It is the student's responsibility to familiarize themselves with each instructor’s policies, and to inform the instructor in advance if it will be necessary to missa number of classes. Poor attendance is highly correlated with poor grades. JEHP students are expected to attend their KSU courses during their high schools’ spring breaks.
WHAT COSTS MUST JOINT ENROLLMENT STUDENTS PAY?
The Accel Program, a component of Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship, pays for JEHP students’ tuition for approved courses. It also pays for most of KSU’s mandatory fees, up to a state cap of $283, and provides a textbook allowance of $150 for students taking 6 or more credits, and $75 for students taking less than 6 credits. In 2008-09, because KSU’s mandatory fees exceed the state cap, JEHP students were responsible for paying $190 in fees each semester. We anticipate a 3% annual increase in fees. Depending on the textbooks required by particular classes, the cost of textbooks may exceed the Accel allowance. Students are responsible for the remainder of their book costs. The credit hours paid for by Accel are subtracted from students’ total HOPE credits. Essentially, since JEHP students are in college early, they are drawing on their HOPE funds early. Accepted students will be given Accel applications at their first advising session.
ARE JOINT ENROLLMENT COURSES TRANSFERABLE TO OTHER COLLEGES?
All JEHP courses with a "C" or better will transfer easily within the University System of Georgia and to most public colleges and universities nationwide. Policies vary among private colleges. Please contact the institution you are planning to attend for information regarding the transfer of specific courses.
WHAT STEPS MUST I TAKE TO CONTINUE MY ENROLLMENT AT KSU FOLLOWING HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION?
The spring semester of the senior year is the last semester a Joint Enrollment student may attend KSU without re-applying for admission. Following high school graduation, the student must re-apply for "beginning freshman" status and submit a final high school transcript showing all senior year grades and date of high school graduation. Readmission applications are available on the web site at www.kennesaw.edu and in the Office of Admissions. The readmission application and final high school transcript must be received in the Office of Admissions prior to the fall admission deadline.
CAN A HOME-SCHOOLED STUDENT BE IN THE JOINT ENROLLMENT HONORS PROGRAM?
KSU values the educational experiences of home-schooled students and has a long history of working with home-schooled students in the Admissions process.
A number of home-schooled students participate in the Joint Enrollment Honors Program each year.
According to Board of Regents policy, to be eligible for Joint Enrollment, home-schooled students must attend an accredited center endorsed by the Accrediting Commission for Independent Study (ACIS) or the Georgia Accrediting Commission (GAC).
Home-schooled students must also meet the same JEHP admissions standards as other students, including high school GPA and SAT or ACT scores. Home-schooled students who attend an accredited center endorsed by the Accrediting Commission for Independent Study (ACIS) or the Georgia Accrediting Commission (GAC) may be eligible to participate in the high school/college Joint Enrollment Program based on review of academic preparation (on track to complete CPC).
Home-schooled students not enrolled in an accredited center would not be eligible for the Joint Enrollment/Accel programs.
The Joint Enrollment Honors Program is a selective process based on both university and Georgia Board of Regent standards. KSU reserves the right to refuse or limit entry.
