Retention Guidelines

The Board of Regents (BOR) of the University System of Georgia has established guidelines for how long university records should be kept in order to satisfy federal and state laws, and to comply with external agencies, such as accrediting entities. Click here to see the entire listing of the BOR Retention Guidelines.

Records that have reached the end of their retention period should be destroyed.

If your department does not have a retention schedule, if you need help interpreting the BOR Guidelines, or if you are unsure what the destruction dates of particular records should be, call the Archives (x6289) for an appointment.

For records that should be permanently retained, call x6289 to determine their suitability for transfer to the University Archives.
