The media and art patrons have recognized KSU for its quality exhibitions of Latino and Latin American Art for many years. This exhibition showcases works from collectors of Latin American Art for the first time in the metropolitan Atlanta area. The exhibition will include a catalog and lectures by artists and scholars in collaboration with the Center for Hispanic Studies during Hispanic Heritage Month in October.

Premiere Series: Pro Arte Quartet.

Founded in 1912, the Pro Arte Quartet performs throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Impressed by the quartet’s extraordinary musicianship, composers like Milhaud, Honegger and Bartók prepared new works specifically for the ensemble. Stranded in the United States by outbreak of World War II in 1938, Pro Arte found a permanent home at the University of Wisconsin, but has continued to record and perform standard classical repertoire as well as exciting new music. Many composers continue to select the quartet to premiere their works. The ensemble includes violinists David Perry and Suzanne Beia, violist Sally Chisholm and cellist Parry Karp.

“Monkey King.”
Re-told by Margaret Baldwin. Base on Wu Ch’eng’s Journey to the West. He’s bold. Tenacious. Indestructible. He’s a rebel with an infectious laugh. Monkey has enough tricks up his sleeve to wreak havoc on bureaucrats from the Gardens of Heaven to the Gates of Hell. Join us for a contemporary American spin on this ancient Chinese tale as we follow the irrepressible Monkey King on his quest for immortality and—ultimately—truth itself. But watch out, this is one bad monkey. Presented as part of the KSU Celebration of the Year of China. This production also will be presented at the International Theater Festival in Shanghai, China in December 2005. Funding for the performances in China are made possible by a generous grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation and by the Shanghai Theatre Academy.

Premiere Series: Awadagin Pratt, piano.

Awadagin Pratt is an artist who challenges the classical music establishment, forcing it to rethink the way the music is perceived and heard. When Pratt bounded on stage for his winning presentation at the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1992, his appearance caused a buzz, but by the end of his performance, he had won over the judges and audience. Since then, he has recorded four solo CDs and an all-Bach recording with the St. Lawrence String Quartet. Pratt has performed solo recitals and numerous piano concerti around the world. January 14
Premiere Series: Jennifer Larmore, mezzo-soprano.
Jennifer Larmore’s operatic début in 1986 as Sesto in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito in France marked the start of a brilliant international career in which operas of Rossini, Bellini, Mozart and Handel have come to figure prominently. After a triumphant decade in Europe, she returned to the United States for her Metropolitan Opera début in 1995. Since then, she has continued to perform and record around the world with the most impressive orchestras and opera companies. With this recital, the Georgia-born superstar returns to her home county for an intimate evening.

Merging East and West: Chen Zhen’s Cross-Cultural Installations.
Chen Zhen (1955-2000) is an internationally renowned artist who combined Eastern sensibility with Western contemporary aesthetics. His works are critical satires with political, economic, and cultural overtones or meditations on the interface between matter and spirit. This exhibition features five installations, created over the last five years of his life, that engage viewers in the power of objects to create metaphysical connections to the transcendent. Presented as part of the KSU Celebration of the Year of China. This exhibtion and its guest lectures have been made possible, in part, through funding provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Georgia Humanities Council. Premiere Series: Monica Mancini, vocalist.
Following her chart-topping debut CD that spotlighted the compositions of her father Henry Mancini, Monica Mancini continued to win critical acclaim with her second effort, a tribute to Johnny Mercer. Mancini’s distinctive vocal stylings have earned her a place among the elite vocal performers of today, but she has built her following on the solid foundation of great composers like her father, Mercer and Barry Manilow, who has written specifically for her. As Manilow has said, “Music has been waiting for a singer like Monica.”

Premiere Series: Joseph Lin, violin.
Presented as part of the KSU Celebration of the Year of China.Having won the 1996 Concert Artist Guild International Competition, Joseph Lin has earned broad recognition for his mature artistry. Now with several more international titles to his credit, Lin has earned praise as a soloist and a chamber musician. In 2000, he participated in Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project at Tanglewood. Lin began playing violin at age four and has completed violin studies at Juilliard and Harvard. In 2004, he earned a Fulbright Scholarship to study Chinese music in Beijing.

Featuring a musical score drawn from the heartfelt spirituals of the deep South, the urban exuberance of the jazz age and contemporary music by African-Americans.

Juan Logan: Caught Off Guard, Selected Works from 1965-2005.
The paintings and sculptures in this 40-year retrospective of Juan Logan’s work explore the impact of racism, social change and injustice with symbolically charged images and the healing power of ritual objects rooted in the rural black South of his past. His art reflects the changes he-and society-has experienced in America since the 1960s, and challenges viewers to move beyond our differences to an understanding of our shared humanity.

There is nothing disabled about the creative visions of these artists, many of whom have achieved national recognition for their drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, fabric design, jewelry or ceramics. This traveling exhibition features works from the 2005-2006 Annual Juried Competition.
