“The Silken Phoenix.”
The Core Ensemble and actress Fiona Choi salute the life and works of three of Asia’s greatest women poets: Ho Xuan Huong of Vietnam, Izumi Shikibu of Japan and Li Qingzhao of China. Featuring music by Kui Dong, Melissa Hui, Chinary Ung, Somei Satoh, Keiko Abe, Bun-Ching Lam, Lei Liang, Tan Dun and Chou Wen-Chung.

Join us for one–or—both of two evenings of spoken word performances, featuring a program of three performance poets each night.

“As You Like It.” By William Shakespeare. Directed by Harrison Long.
We present for your pleasure the Bard’s delectable pastoral comedy, a tale of reunion and redemption, wherein evil men are turned to repentance, brothers long separated are at last reconcile, children are reunited with their parents, those wrongly exiled are returned to the full blessing of citizenship, and lovers, seemingly star-crossed, are magically connected. And along the way, the fair lady Rosalind proves that clothes do make the man-at least for a little while.

“Monkey King.”
Re-told by Margaret Baldwin. Base on Wu Ch’eng’s Journey to the West. He’s bold. Tenacious. Indestructible. He’s a rebel with an infectious laugh. Monkey has enough tricks up his sleeve to wreak havoc on bureaucrats from the Gardens of Heaven to the Gates of Hell. Join us for a contemporary American spin on this ancient Chinese tale as we follow the irrepressible Monkey King on his quest for immortality and—ultimately—truth itself. But watch out, this is one bad monkey. Presented as part of the KSU Celebration of the Year of China. This production also will be presented at the International Theater Festival in Shanghai, China in December 2005. Funding for the performances in China are made possible by a generous grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation and by the Shanghai Theatre Academy.

A celebration on the very weekend Wolfgang turns 250! Featuring Mozart’s Gran Partita Serenade, performed by the KSU Faculty Ensemble, interspersed with letters from Mozart to his father. John Gentile narrates.

“On the Verge, or the Geography of Yearning.”
By Eric Overmeyer. Directed by Susan Reid.The surrealist comedy “On the Verge” finds a trio of female explorers from the Victorian transported to 1950s America, where they explore such exotica as ice cream bars, Jacuzzis, and Burma Shave.

“Ain’t I A Woman!”
A chamber music theater performance by the Core Ensemble and actress Liz Mikel saluting the life and works of four powerful African-American women: Sojourner Truth, Zora Neale Hurston, Clementine Hunter and Fannie Lou Hamer. Featuring a musical score drawn from the heartfelt spirituals of the deep South, the urban exuberance of the jazz age and contemporary music by African-Americans.

“Beckett Shorts: Works Written and inspired by Samuel Beckett.”
Coordinated by Karen Robinson.The program will feature Beckett’s work, as well as the world premiere of new work inspired by Beckett.
