COTA honors spring graduates

By Jarmea L. Boone

On May 14, 2009, the Kennesaw State University College of the Arts recognized its spring graduating class in KSU’s 99th commencement.

Tom Key, executive artistic director of Atlanta’s Theatrical Outfit at The Balzer Theater, delivered the keynote address. Key has been the executive artistic director of Theatrical Outfit since 1995, and it has since become the first theater in the United States to achieve silver certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design from the U.S. Green Building Council. Key’s numerous honors include, most recently, a 2008 Georgia Arts and Entertainment Legacy Award. He is one of Atlanta’s most celebrated actors and has been in demand for more than three decades, performing on stages at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Lambs Theater in New York, The Westwood Playhouse in Los Angeles, and Oxford University in England.

The Kennesaw State University Brass Quintet, led by Interim Conductor of Wind Ensembles Paul Davis, played during the prelude and postlude of ceremony. Music performance senior Michael Alcorn led the audience in the national anthem and the alma mater. Karen Robinson, associate professor of theatre and 2009 recipient of the KSU Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award, served as the chief marshal.
