KENNESAW, Ga.—Kennesaw State University’s College of the Arts celebrates its tenth annual Starlight Concert Series with five major jazz and pops concerts under the stars at the university’s Legacy Gazebo Amphitheater. The public is invited and the park-like atmosphere creates a family-friendly opportunity for a picnic. The events are held on Sunday nights and most begin at 7:30 p.m.
On July 1, the Cobb Symphony Orchestra will open the season with a traditional patriotic concert celebrating the fourth of July holiday. Fireworks will signal the finale. This concert is free to all members of the community. It begins at 8 p.m.
The season continues with KSU Jazz Ensemble on July 15, featuring big band favorites.
Grammy-winning bandleader Poncho Sanchez will bring his popular Latin jazz band to Kennesaw on July 29. His band combines congas, piano, timbales, bass, saxophone, flute, trumpet, flugelhorn and trombone to create a distinctive Afro-Cuban and be-bop rhythm. The KSU performance is part of an international tour following the band’s May 2007 release of its latest CD, “Raise Your Hand.”
Next, Regina Carter graces the stage with a range of original, classics and improvisational jazz violin compositions on Aug. 12. Although she is touring jazz festivals this summer, this appearance at KSU will be her only appearance in the South. Carter has recently been named a MacArthur Fellow and has received the prestigious “Genius Award” by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Wrapping up the summer will be jazz vocalist Connie Evingson on Aug. 26, with her interpretation of the great jazz standards. Evingson, who has recorded and performed across the country and in Europe and in Japan, is a jazz vocalist who combines a silky smooth voice with a sense of swing and adventure. She will be accompanied by pianist Mary Louise Knutson.
Guests of the Starlight Series are welcome to bring lawn chairs and picnic items to the Gazebo Amphitheater. Lawn seating is $5 for most concerts; free for the July 1 patriotic event. The gates open at 6 p.m.
Table reservations are available for parties up to six. Tables are $50. Table reservations must be made at least one week in advance.
