KENNESAW, Ga.—The of the Kennesaw State University School of Music will present two unique musical events on Sept. 18 and Sept. 23. The first event is the KSU Chamber Music Ensemble and Guests concert, which will take place on Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. in the Performance Hall of the Dr. Bobbie Bailey & Family Performance Center. The Sept. 23 concert is the KSU String Trio and Friends, which will also be held at 8 p.m. in the Performance Hall. Both programs will highlight KSU’s accomplished and renowned professional musicians in Georgia.

On Sept. 18, the KSU Chamber Music Ensemble and Guests concert will feature Bartók’s “Sonata for two pianos and two percussionists.” The performers for this piece will be KSU Director of Keyboard Studies David Watkins, KSU Instructor of Percussion Studies John Lawless, award-winning concert pianist Robert Henry and principal percussionist for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Tom Sherwood.

“The performance features virtuosic playing and a unique combination of

Helen Kim

instruments,” Lawless stated. “It shows off all of the players.”

The Sept. 23 KSU String Trio and Friends concert will feature artists Helen Kim, violin; Sou Chun Su, violin; Cathy Lynn, viola; Allyson Fleck, viola; Charae Krueger, cello; and Brad Ritchie, cello.

The program for the event will consist of two selections. The first will be Bohuslav Martinu’s String Trio No.1. “This work was recently discovered in 2005, and this may be the first performance of the work in the Atlanta area,” said KSU Assistant Professor of Violin Helen Kim. “The Martinu has not yet been recorded and is a wonderful addition to the string trio repertoire. From a listener's perspective, it will be interesting to see how the sound world changes with the doubling of the instruments from a string trio to a string sextet.

The second work will be Brahms’ Sextet No. 2 in G Major. Kim believes that this segment will offer audiences a unique attraction. “This piece is scored for two violins, two violas and two cellos. It is one of the most loved works of chamber music,” she stated.

The Chamber Music Ensemble and Guests concert is Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. in the Bailey Performance Center. The String Trio and Friends concert is Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. in the Bailey Performance Center. Admission for both events is free. For more information, visit www.kennesaw.edu/arts.
