Cultural classics will collide for an evening of “firsts” in a one-night-only event when Kennesaw State University music and theatre students take the stage at the historic Earl Smith Strand Theatre in Marietta, Ga.

Associate Professor and Artistic Director Dean Adams explains that while KSU’s Department of Theatre and Performance Studies has performed previously at the Strand, “this is the first time we have presented this kind of concert and the first time that the School of Music and the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies have produced a joint concert of opera and musical theatre selections.”

“Opera Meets Broadway” will feature Broadway titles ranging from "Fugue for Tinhorns" from Guys and Dolls, to "Lily's Eyes" from A Secret Garden, interspersed with such opera titles as the "Toreador's Song" from Carmen to "Una Furtiva" from L'Elisir d'Amore (The Elixir of Love), all accompanied by KSU artist-in-residence Judith Cole on a single grand piano.

Adams points out that the more than twenty-five students performing have been selected from the two classes that are producing the show, the Opera class, comprised primarily of vocal performance majors in the School of Music, and the Musical Theatre Ensemble, the theatre and performance studies class that focuses on audition and performance skills for musical theatre concentration students.

Approximately fifteen selections will be performed, about half from opera and half from musical theatre, many pulled from recent KSU productions.

“Opera Meets Broadway” will be performed for one night only on Tuesday, April 30 at 8 p.m. Admission is $15 for the general public, and $10 for KSU faculty, staff, students and alumni.  Tickets may be purchased at the Strand Theatre box office at 117 North Park Square in Marietta, Georgia, or by calling 770-293-0080.
