School of Music Professor Russell Young Passes Away

KENNESAW, Ga. (December 9, 2013)

Kennesaw State University College of the Artsí School of Music regrets to inform you that Dr. Russell Young, Musical Director of Opera and Musical Theatre and Professor of Vocal Repertoire, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2013, after a brief illness.

At Kennesaw State University since 2005, Dr. Young was a beloved professor, colleague, and musician. As a vocal coach, accompanist, and conductor, he helped shepherd enormous growth in the vocal area and in the opera program. Dr. Young co-founded the Miami Chamber ensemble, and served as an official accompanist for the Regional Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in Atlanta, Georgia.

Prior to his appointment at Kennesaw State University, Dr. Young served as the Program Director and Conductor for Opera Theater at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, where he conducted over twenty-five operas. Additionally, he coached at the American Institute of Musical Studies program in Graz, Austria, University of Miami in Salzburg program, Taos Opera Institute, and Solfest Opera Seminar in Key West, Florida.

The School of Music will hold a memorial service to celebrate the life of Dr. Young on Monday, January 6 at 4:00 p.m. in Morgan Hall of the Dr. Bobbie Bailey & Family Performance Center. The memorial service is open to the public.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Dr. Russell Young Memorial Opera Fund to support opera activities at Kennesaw State University. Checks should be made out to the KSU Foundation with a note mentioning the Dr. Russell Young Opera Fund and mailed to:
