ABOUT THE
Georgia Young Singers
OF KENNESAW STATE UNIVERSITY
Established
in 1978 as the Cobb Youth Chorale, the Georgia Young Singers is
now affiliated with Kennesaw State University and is a nonprofit
organization which provides music instruction with the goal of
attaining excellence in the performance of choral music. Opportunities
for musical training are provided by the active schedule planned
for singers throughout the year.
Currently, the Georgia Young Singers is made up of three choirs.
Preparatory Choir
The children at this level have demonstrated an ability to match
pitch. In this choir, they will improve their unison singing skills
and begin basic training in easy 2-part work. Note reading, basic
score reading and basic vocal technique begin at this level.
Concert Choir
In this choir, part-singing skill development is continued. Vocal
techniques, basic pentatonic sight-reading and solfege skills
are emphasized, and music theory, history and appreciation begin
to be developed.
Tour Choir
This is the advanced choir for students who have established good
vocal technique. Students at this level have advanced solfege
and sight-reading skills and have developed excellent rehearsal
habits. This group participates in an annual summer tour.

History
OF THE GEORGIA YOUNG SINGERS OF KSU
Mrs.
Margaret Rogers, retired Music Supervisor for Marietta City Schools,
founded the Georgia Young Singers of KSU as Cobb Youth Chorus
of Georgia in January of 1978. Dr. Elizabeth Kimble, a former
Cobb County public school music specialist was the first Director.
The Chorus began with thirty children, ages eight through ten,
who met after school. Within a few months, the students were performing
locally and presented their first musical in June of 1978. Through
the years the Chorus has grown from one choir into two (a training
choir and a tour group), has over fifty members, and requires
four staff members: Artistic Director, Business Manager, Financial
Administrator and Accompanist. The Chorus provides training in
choral and general music as well as performance opportunities
for young people, ages 8-18, within the North Georgia area. Students
are trained in vocal technique, music theory, and choreography
while incorporating the use of drama concepts and instrumental
accompaniment.
From its beginning, the Chorus was designed to be a non-profit,
community organization dedicated to musical excellence. The group
is financed by donations, fundraising projects, tuition, and grants.
Disadvantaged, disabled, minorities, and special populations are
encouraged and do participate. Scholarships are made available,
whenever possible, through generous business and individual support,
enabling these children the same opportunities for participation.
The Chorus is supported by a Board of Directors comprised of eleven
members from the community at large. These board members give
freely and generously of their time and expertise. Several of
them have been long-time supporters of Georgia Young Singers.
In 1997, Elsie McDow became the Artistic Director. In the fall
of 1999 the affiliation with Kennesaw State University was established
with the support of Mrs. McDow, the Board of Directors, the KSU
College of the Arts faculty and KSU President Betty Siegel. On
January 1, 2000, the name was officially changed to, The
Georgia Young Singers of Kennesaw State University. In 2003,
Alyssa Coble became the ensemble's artistic director.
GYS performs at many community events and travels throughout the
metro-Atlanta area. Local event highlights include collaboration
with the Cobb Symphony, Frank Boggs and the Georgia Festival Chorus,
the Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts,
and the KSU Fine Arts Department. Performing venues locally have
included The Governors Mansion, the State Capitol, the Junior
League Womens National Convention in Atlanta, Callenwolde
Open House, Y.W.C.A. Annual Womens Conference, the EMC Annual
Members Meeting and the Chamber of Commerce Annual Prayer Breakfast.
In addition to performing locally, a tour is conducted each spring.
Tours over the past few years have included a Nashville recording
session and audience with the acclaimed Nashville Childrens
Chorus, a trip to Washington, D.C., and a tour of Denmark. A 1999
North American Tour to Toronto, Canada included a workshop with
the music faculty of the University of Toronto and a visit to
hear the famous Toronto Childrens Chorus. Spring Tour 2000
to New York afforded the children a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
to perform at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall with the National
Childrens Chorus under the direction of Henry Leck. In 2001,
after a study in The British Choral Tradition, GYS
toured London, England presenting concerts in several significant
churches and cathedrals there. This years Southern
Tour, has given our singers an opportunity to study and
experience part of our southern musical heritage.
The artistic quality of our performances, as well as the dedication
of our organizations patrons and members will continue to
make the Georgia Young Singers of KSU a viable and significant
part of the cultural life of our community. This organization
is committed to providing the best in musical training for our
students and continually strives for musical excellence.
