SoHo Welcomes KSU Artist

Robert Sherer
is taking a bite out of the Big Apple this fall. Having already been toasted by the art world in France and Italy in international exhibitions in the last two years, this Kennesaw State Assistant Professor of Art is now being recognized as a representative “Southern” artist in the New York City exhibition “Southern Fried: A Contemporary Survey of Southern Artists.” The exhibition runs through Nov. 2, at The Anthem Gallery in SoHo.

Sherer is exhibiting pieces from his Blood Works series. These drawings intertwine botanical illustration and sexuality. According to the artist, the drawings represent the intersection between the ideal (the beauty of the flowers) and reality (the fact that flowers are a plant’s genitalia).

“Ultimately, the subject matter concerns the complexities of romantic life and sexual attraction in the HIV era,” says Sherer, who uses blood instead of ink to create these unique still lifes.

Curated by Robert Matre of Atlanta’s Matre Gallery, “Southern Fried” also features Georgia artists Jonathan Fenske, Joseph Guay, Charles Keiger, Tom Key, Carl Linstrum, Steve Penley, Dixie Purvis and Cedric Smith.

“There is no particular theme to this show, other than the requirement that the artists currently live and work in the south," says Robert Matre. "However, it is interesting to notice the similar themes that run through some of the work, especially in regards to southern sensibilities. Even though racial, political and social issues are addressed, a true southern charm permeates the work in this exhibition. This is a show that is pleasing to the eye, yet interesting to the mind."
