a Drum with Your Kid Grab your Quaker Oats canister, a wood block or an actual drumanything you can bang onand join the Family Drum Circle at the Legacy Gazebo Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 1. Young and old alike are welcome to participate in this free interactive community event. There is no audience in a drum circle, KSU Assistant Professor of Music Barbara Hammond said. Everyone helps create a rhythm song unique to that moment in time. The Family Drum Circle is just one event being held on campus during the Southeast Regional Conference of the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association Aug. 1-2. While the Drum Circle is open to the entire community, the conference is especially intended to benefit pre-school teachers, music teachers and other professionals who work with young children. There is not a lot of substantive training available for pre-school teachers, said Hammond, who is one of the featured speakers. This conference will provide practical knowledge and pedagogical approaches for teachers working with children at a very important stage in their development. Dr. Fritz Mengert, who specialized in brain development, will deliver the keynote address for the conference. Other featured speakers include Jennifer Bodde of the Center for Puppetry Arts, Kindermusik founder Dr. Lorna Heyge, psycologist Dr. Randall Midock, music therapist Paula Midock, teaching artist Peggy Benkeser, music educators Dr. Joy Jordan DeCarbo and Dr. Joyce Galliford, and Charlie Tighe, who is a music teacher at Murdock Elementary School in Cobb County. The full conference addresses topics including how music and movement help children learn, integrating music and movement throughout the curriculum, classroom techniques and working with parents. Admission to the Family Drum Circle is free. In case of rain, the Drum Circle will be held in the Carmichael Student Center . Registration for the full conference is $75. Discounts are available for students. SDU and DHR credit is available. For more information, visit www.kennesaw.edu/music or call Adina Lambert at 770-518-0676. |
