Steve Burton came to Kennesaw State University in the spring of 2008 following a career in church music. Originally from suburban Nashville, TN, Steve earned his bachelor’s degree in music education (vocal) from the University of Tennessee—Knoxville and later completed the Master of Church Music degree at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY where he majored in conducting and church music. Influential teachers were Ambrose Holford and Donald Neuen at Tennessee and Donald Hustad, Milburn Price, and Archie Kliewer at Southern Seminary. He served churches of various denominations in Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Georgia as minister of music, leading and administering choral and instrumental programs with participants ranging in age from pre-school to senior adult. Steve has performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus, the ASO Chamber Chorus, and as a staff singer at Atlanta’s Cathedral of St. Philip (Episcopal), where he was also interim director of the Parish Choir.

In the spring of 2007, Steve completed the Master of Library and Information Science degree at Valdosta State University. While involved in library studies, he worked for the Cobb County Public Library System.

In October 2008, Steve was named Arts Librarian, serving as liaison between College of the Arts programs and the University’s Sturgis Library. He sees his mission as helping connect students, faculty, and staff with the information they need, while helping them to become more proficient and independent in locating resources on their own.

Julie Torney

Cataloger and public services assistant

Julie Torney is cataloger and public services assistant in the Performing Arts Library.  After receiving a bachelor’s degree in English, Julie earned a Master of Library Science degree from Kent State University. She worked as a reference librarian and cataloger for a public library system in Ohio for nearly ten years before moving to the Kennesaw area with her husband in 2009. She worked most recently as a medical librarian in Atlanta prior to coming to Kennesaw State University.

Madeline (Maddy) Scott

Student assistant

This is Madeline (Maddy) Scott's first semester as a student assistant in the Performing Arts Library. She is a sophomore vocal performance major and says she is "really loving it." Maddy is in several ensembles on campus and is exploring her love of opera. She plans to continue singing for many years to come.
