  • Note hyphen.
  • Do not underline, italicize or enclose in quotation marks, brackets or parentheses.
  • Most style guides allow for the capitalization of letters in e-mail addresses; however, COTA style does not.

*A note about substituting symbols in email addresses: AP style suggests spelling out e-mail address symbols such as underscores or the “at” symbol. COTA style is to avoid this practice because it can cause confusion.

emeritus: gender-neutral term.

  • “Emeritus” is capitalized and placed after the formal title of the person <Professor Emeritus Thomas Anderson teaches economics.>.
  • Do not italicize and do not capitalize when the distinction is not part of a complete title.
  • Plural form is “emeriti,” which is never capitalized <Professors emeriti John Smith, Jane Doe and Bob Jones met at this year’s conference.>. (AP)

endowments, named

  • Generally, always capitalized.
  • For more information, see the noun’s (chair, scholarship, building, etc.) individual entry.

Eric and Gwendolyn Brooker Rehearsal Hall: complete name of the rehearsal hall in the Bailey Performance Center.

  • Use complete name upon first reference; subsequent reference is Brooker Rehearsal Hall.

  • Capitalize and enclose in quotation marks.

  • Capitalize and enclose in quotation marks.

event titles

  • Capitalize and enclose in quotation marks. (AP)

exhibition catalog titles

  • Capitalize and enclose in quotation marks “<Charles Allen Wright: A Measured Response” is the title of the catalog, which was published for the exhibition of the same name.> (CMS 17.240)
