gay (noun and adj.)

  • Can be used to refer to both male and female homosexuals; however when referring to a group composed of homosexual males and females, the phrase “gay and lesbian” should be used. (AP)

grades, elementary school

  • Hyphenate noun and adjectival uses <The art education major is working with third-graders at a local school. An 11th-grade student commented on the exhibit.>. (AP)

graduate(d) from

  • Usually used as <She graduated from Harvard, or, He will graduate from Juilliard>. 
  • Avoid using in passive voice (e.g., He was graduated from Brown University.). (AP)
