Accountant IV, Student Accounts Manager
Bursar's Office

by Rita Adams

Cathleen Kiss joined KSU in June of 1990 as a Student Assistant yet within a few months she landed a full time position in Business Services. Over the years, she maneuvered through the ranks with quiet determination; building an expansive knowledge base of Board of Regents, KSU and Bursar’s Office policy and procedures. This experience and knowledge ultimately contributes to her success as Student Accounts Manager and that of the Bursar’s Office.

Cathy received her Bachelor’s in Art from Kennesaw State University in 1995. One might say what does art have to do with accounting? Well, there is a certain 'art' in handling students. Cathy has the sage ability to give a student bad news and they will actually smile and thank her for it!

As Student Account manager, Cathy’s responsibilities include fee assessment, third party payments and refunds. Cathy and her staff alone create the rate table that assesses student fees each semester; and, also initiate that process that generates millions in refunds to students KSUOne cards. Though many of the Bursar’s Office processes are automated, Cathy painstakingly reviews the reports daily to ensure each of the processes is functioning properly. Still, Cathy’s greatest skill lies in her decision making ability. Cathy is the 'go to' person for the Bursar’s Office. If there’s a problem, she solves it, even if it means staying late. The decisions Cathy makes have a great impact on the campus at large; she does not act hastily but always confidently. Cathy’s attention to detail, intuitiveness and incredible memory together ensure that KSUs Bursars Office is Board of Regents compliant and support the state wide goal of 'Faster, Friendlier, Easier' service.

Susan Dalton, Controller, adds, "Cathleen Kiss is an excellent manager. She is well organized and has that rare quality of being able to give both good and bad feedback to staff and students alike in a positive and reinforcing way... She’s amazing."

At home, Cathy and her husband Zoltan have a beautiful daughter, Kristina and provide arm’s length care and support for Cathy’s mom who lives with them. When Cathy’s at home, she returns to her first love – art – instilling it in daughter, Kristina, who loves to draw horses; Irish, tap and jazz dance; Girl Scouts, basketball and horse back riding. In her rare moments of down time, Cathy enjoys reading, gardening, long walks on her favorite beach in Hilton Head and a good glass of merlot. If you ever have an opportunity to enter the inner sanctum of the Bursar’s Office looking for Cathy, you can just follow the melodic laughter.
