Print Shop Opening

by Gary Dalton

The new print shop will be open June 29th. It is located in the Student Center with an entrance near the Book Store entrance. This will allow anyone that has a large copy job to carry, or needs to come from off campus, to park in the visitor lot to drop off or pick up their job. (All you have to do is make sure you get in and out in less than 30 minutes to avoid having to pay for parking there.) There will also be the option to e-mail your job to the Print Shop with any specific instructions you have.

Since we are in the last year of our current contract, the operator cannot amortize state of the art equipment over just a single year of operation. However, as we move into the RFP process for the next Copy/Print service contract, we will be specifying additional services that the Print Shop must provide. So we can look forward to many more options in July of 2010.

This month we will be starting with two high speed color and two high speed B&W devices. Additional services offered at start up will include:

  • Binding for Color and B&W
    • Saddle Stitch
    • Spiral
    • Plastic
    • Trim
  • Wide Format, including banners
  • Color service will be "Business Color" not glossy marketing quality production (that has to wait until the start of FY10)
  • Support for Visual Arts Department Photo printing (starting in July)
    • Inkjet printers in wide and very wide format will be moved from VA to the Print Shop
    • Students will be provided with appropriate file formats to submit
    • Pricing will include photo paper
    • This service will be available to everyone
  • Pricing
    • Photo printing cost will vary by size
    • B&W pricing will start the same as for our distributed fleet ($0.05 per page)
    • Color pricing will start at $0.25 per page versus $0.30 on the distributed fleet
    • Both Color and B&W prices will come down over time as we get better data on volumes and costs
  • Minimum job sizes will be required to get the reduced price (to be provided later).

To summarize, the new print shop will provide the same print quality we now have while adding new binding options, staff to run large jobs for you, lower prices, and fast turnaround.
