KSU Commuter Chronicles

This article is reprinted with permission from CobbRides, encouraging Clean Commute Alternatives!

Toni Waters, Assistant to Vice President Dr. Randy Hinds, and Chauncey Waters, Supervisor for KSU's Automotive Shop, have been CarPooling since August 2005. Together they have amassed over 1,900 clean commute trips, including CarPooling, TeleWorking, Transit, VanPooling, and Compressed Work Week. The efforts of these two KSU commuters have removed a staggering 8,066 miles of vehicle travel from our roads, eliminated 4.03 tons of pollution from the air, and have saved over $4,000 in commute costs.

Since their commute is a lengthy one, Toni compares their car to a rolling suitcase, "We keep our car stocked with any gear or gizmo possible because Jasper is a long, long ride back and returning home to retrieve an item is forbidden." The couple also rides together for lunch whenever possible.

Clean commuting is important to the Waters and they have found a convenient way to do it, even with non-traditional hours, "We looked into vanpools, but our schedules are so different in that we arrive at work at 7:00 AM and leave at 6:00 PM (working a 4-10 week to save even more on gas). [So we] have been carpooling for years and it really makes a difference."

According to Toni, if CarPooling were suddenly no longer possible, there are many things they would miss, including, "the companionship. Of course, higher gas bills would come into play. The thought of my individual contribution to the dirty air would be a haunting feature as well. One less vehicle on the road to pollute and crowd the highways is always a goal worthy of achieving."

Congratulations to Toni and Chauncey for their positive impact on our environment and the KSU community.

Welcome to ASaP!

Mathew (Matt) Cable  joined the ASaP technical support team in May. Matt comes to us with a broad spectrum of technical skills in both hardware and software. Whether it was helping Turner Broadcasting improve its internal networks, setting up PCI compliant sales venues for NASCAR vendors on line and at the tracks, or repairing PCs, Matt has the skills to get the job done. He has already been working on our biometric access control system for the new dining hall, including working with students at orientations as well as learning about our various lines of business and related systems. Matt’s office is in House 48, but he will often be found in the Bookstore, Dining Hall, or Retail Food Operations involved in those systems.

Dawn Oviatt  joined the Culinary Services team on June 1st and will be working in the meal plan office at The Commons. She moved to Georgia from Canada three years ago with her daughter Katie. Dawn says that cold is overrated and, after living in the arctic for many years, she was most certainly ready for a change to warmer weather. In Canada, Dawn worked as an Administrator/Office Manager within the sales and marketing division of Petro-Canada after having spent 18 years in the banking industry. Dawn was also in a touring bluegrass band called Maple Creek and was a featured performer in the Hank Williams Tribute show. Dawn brings great enthusiasm and office skills to KSU. She currently is working in House 48, but will move to The Commons when construction is completed.

Please join us in welcoming the newest members of Auxiliary Services and Programs.
