Larger Numbers than Expected at The Commons
by Rob Nolen
With Fall 2010 underway, the Culinary Services staff has noticed two things: Meal plan sales for the semester have been very successful and daily entry counts in The Commons have proved to be much higher than initially expected.
Meal Plan Entry Counts Soar on Weekdays
Historical data from Fall 2009 and expected increases in enrollment led Culinary Services to expect a low to moderate swell in daily entries to The Commons. Instead, the increases have been quite large. An incredible 5,761 meal plan entries were used in the dining hall on Monday, August 16, representing a more than 15% increase over the 5,005 used on the same Monday in 2009. This trend continued throughout the month of August, with weekday entries continuously higher than the same period in 2009. Weekend entry counts have remained flat and even slightly lower than last year.

Meal Plan Sales
One factor contributing to the increase in meal plan entries is a success in the number of meal plan sales for Fall 2010. Here are a few quick figures about the fall semester sales:
- Just over 15,000 meal plans sold!
- More than 300 optional plans sold to part-time students, KSU employees, and guests of the University.
- Over 1,000 students upgrading to plans larger than their requirement.
Retail Sales Lower in 2010
With so many meal plan sales, it has been no surprise that retail entry counts have been lower for the fall semester.

While many members of the surrounding community continue to purchase one-time retail entries at The Commons, the practice has all but died out for part-time students and KSU employees. It seems students and employees now opt to purchase the more cost-effective meal plans.
