Bursar

by Julie Peterson and Cathleen Kiss

In Business Services, when we hear the title "Bursar", we think money... collecting it, that is. Rita Adams is the Bursar for Kennesaw State University and collect it she does, as she oversees the cashiering, student accounts, collections, and refunds for the institution.

Rita received a Bachelor's degree in management from Peru State College in Nebraska and an MBA from Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. Rita has a long history working in higher education, starting at Fayetteville State University where she was the Director of Cash and Accounts Receivable. She then landed at Georgia Perimeter College's Clarkston Campus as the Student Account Manager. When she spotted an opening at Kennesaw State - over 10 years ago, she applied for and became the Student Account Manager in the Bursar's Office. After only two years, she was promoted to the Bursar's position – where she has remained since.

It has been quite a ride! As the Bursar here at KSU, Rita has steered the office through a lot of growth and change over the years - such as enrollment increases, new tuition plans, changing fees structures as well as many technical changes, upgrades and industry conversions – from accepting credit card payments online through the collaborative effort of the implementation of the KSU One card as a refund resource. As an administrative member of the Banner committee - she works closely with the Registrar, Director of Financial Aid and Director of Admissions, among others, to ensure that student registration, fees, payments and refunds are processed in an orderly and timely manner.

When asked what she loves about working at KSU, her response was, "The People! It's exciting to work with such a dynamic group of problem solvers!" As you can tell from that response, Rita brings an unmatched enthusiasm for her work. She greets her staff daily with a smile in her voice and in turn, they can't help but smile back. Under Rita's direction, the Bursar's Office has been actively involved with the Customer Service Initiative at KSU. She has ensured that her staff continuously participates in the customer service training offered by the Center for University Learning here at KSU and encourages them to pursue professional development opportunities that are offered campus wide.

Rita enjoys dance aerobics when she isn't counting the University's revenue. She's enthusiastic about that as well, maintaining several memberships across the city. She loves to travel – just ask her where she is going next - and she will be sure to have a great trip in the works.
