Portfolio Tips

  

Putting together your writing portfolio, often called "your book," should be fun.  However, don't make the mistake of haphazardly throwing some examples of your work into a notebook. Take a few minutes to see how effective portfolios are structured.

The following Web sites are good examples of E-Portfolios:

Professional Portfolios for Freelance Companies
  • Green Meadows Communications, LLC
    Ms. Amy Meadows's Web site is very thorough. It lists her background and contact information in a clear manner. It also contains a link to her portfolio, which is a collection of writing samples that range from magazine cover stories to newspaper editorials.
  • Helios Communications
    This is a freelance writing company that provides clients with communications materials. The Web site contains a description of the company mission and methodology, as well as a few samples of completed projects.
  • Kirsten Ott Writer-Editor-Thinker
    Ms. Ott's Web site is very thorough portfolio, providing her background and contact information clearly. It also contains links to her writing samples, ranging from travel and feature writing to technical writing and Web content development.
  • Robert Roth
    Mr. Roth's freelance writing Web site has an interesting, well-organized design. He has a collection of samples that include direct mailings, annual reports, and marketing materials.
  • Suzanne Wright
    Ms. Wright's Web site contains information about her writing including the types of writing she has done and also a client list. Samples of her work can be requested through the site.
Academic Portfolios
  • Susan K. Perry
    Dr. Perry is a social psychologist and a writer. Her Web site contains information about her writing and her speaking engagements, and samples of her work.
Commercial Portfolios
  • Peter Bowerman
    Mr. Bowerman is a freelance writer who works for a wide variety of companies. His book, The Well-Fed Writer, is about how to be successful as a freelance writer. This Web site contains information about Mr. Bowerman, samples of his work, and much more.
