William Buskist

Becoming an Excellent Teacher

William Buskist is the Distinguished Professor in the Teaching of Psychology and a Faculty Fellow at Auburn's Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning. In his 30 years at Auburn, he has taught over 35,000 undergraduates, mostly in large sections of introductory psychology. His primary research interests include the professional development of graduate students, excellence in teaching, and effective student learning. He has written and edited several volumes on college and university teaching. Most recently, he has published Evidence-Based Teaching (2011; with Jim Groccia), Effective College and University Teaching: Strategies and Tactics for the New Professoriate (2012; with Victor Benassi), and Handbook of College and University Teaching: Global Perspectives (with Jim Groccia and Mohammed Al Sudairi).

Are we teaching what we think we're teaching?: The importance of validity in psychology

Jessica Irons is currently an Associate Professor at James Madison University. She trained in both experimental health psychology and teaching of psychology at Augusta State University and Auburn University. She routinely engages in the scholarship of teaching and learning and has particular interest in the effects of mastery-based learning on related criterion-based tasks as well as the influence of different types of feedback on student performance. Jessica has been active in the Society for Teaching of Psychology for many years and she currently serves as an associate e-book editor and has chaired several task forces for the society. Jessica primarily teaches research methods and laboratory experience courses. In 2007, she was awarded the Wilbert J. McKeachie Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching by Division 2 of APA.


ABOUT THE 2013 CONFERENCE
Sponsored by the Kennesaw State University Department of Psychology and Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning, the 25th Annual Southeastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology is an opportunity for teachers of psychology to discuss and share experiences and techniques. The conference offers concurrent sessions and invited addresses on teaching techniques and issues associated with undergraduate education. Time is also available for participants to get to know each other and establish contacts with fellow teachers throughout the Southeast. Please join us in celebrating teaching excellence in psychology through sharing best practices, innovative ideas for enhancing student learning, and interacting with your colleagues in a supportive and fun atmosphere.

SPACE IS LIMITED PLEASE REGISTER EARLY
For the last several years we have been at capacity enrollment. Once we reach our capacity, additional registrations will be put on a waiting list for openings due to cancellations. The registration fees are listed below. All registration fees include all meals scheduled during the conference, breaks, and conference materials.

Refund Policy
If a participant has to cancel for any reason, a full refund will be given if the cancellation is received by 5:00 PM on Friday, February 12, 2013.

If flying into Atlanta, from the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport there are several options for reaching the conference hotel.  WE DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING A TAXI DIRECTLY FROM THE AIRPORT BECAUSE OF THE DISTANCE AND HIGH COST.

You can take the Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit System (MARTA) directly from the airport to the Dunwoody (Perimeter Mall) station. The hotel offers a free shuttle service at specific times to and from this station. 

PLEASE CONTACT THE HOTEL IN ADVANCE TO COORDINATE ARRIVAL TIMES WITH THEIR SHUTTLE AND RESERVE A SPACE ON THE SHUTTLE TO OR FROM THE MARTA STATION.

Taxi service to the hotel is also available from this station.
