KSU Faculty Development Funding

2007-2008 (FY08) CETL Travel Funds

NOTE: All funds are expended for FY07.

CETL sponsors travel funds for faculty to attend conferences related to teaching and student learning as it occurs in a higher education setting. Each travel award is limited to a maximum of $300. Travel awards are competitive, with preference given to grant applications in the following priority order: faculty who are making a presentation on a topic directly related to teaching undergraduate or graduate students, faculty receiving an award for excellence in an activity directly related to teaching and student learning, and faculty attending a conference on undergraduate or graduate student teaching and learning. Applications for travel during FY08 (July 1, 2007-June 30, 2008) should be submitted to the CETL Director and a subcommittee of the CETL Faculty Fellows reviews applications and makes final recommendations on awards. A complete description of the fund program, including application materials and criteria, is available at this link (NOTE: This is a Rich Text Format, rtf, document).

Fiscal Year 2008 Tenured Faculty Vitality Funds

List of Previous Recipients and Their Project Abstracts

A team of five KSU faculty and administrators (Jerald Hendrix, Bill Hill, Chris Horne, Ralph Rascati, and Randy Smith) attended the 2003 Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) Institute, "The Vital Faculty: Issues After Tenure." Based upon experiences at that Institute, the team and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Lendley Black, discussed several strategies for encouraging scholarship and facilitating collaborative relationships between non-tenured and tenured faculty cohorts. Based on these discussions, the KSU Faculty Development and Awards Committee coordinates the call and review of proposals for two funding award programs that specifically target tenured faculty at KSU. The KSU Faculty Development and Awards Committee is pleased to announce the call for proposals with funding in fiscal year 2008 (starts July 1, 2007).

Tenured Faculty Scholarship/Creative Activity Enhancement
Funding Awards for Fiscal Year 2008 (July 1, 2007-June 30, 2009)

FDAC Proposal Evaluation Form for This Funding

This program provides up to $15,000 over a 2 year period for substantial projects designed to assist tenured faculty who wish to initiate a significant new scholarship or creative activity focus. Although we currently offer several Incentive Funding Awards for Scholarship/creative activity, the Tenured Faculty Scholarship/Creative Activity Enhancement Funding Awards are designed to supplement that program and specifically target tenured faculty. In addition to the fiscal year funding described in the full call for proposals, limited funds may be available for travel to present scholarship/creative activity findings at regional or national conferences within two years of the funding award. A complete description of the fund program, including application materials and criteria, is available at this link (NOTE: This is a Rich Text Format, rtf, document). The deadline for receipt of proposals is Friday, March 30, 2007.

Tenured Faculty Enhancement Leave Program for Fiscal Year 2008 (July 1, 2007-June 30, 2008)
FDAC Proposal Evaluation Form for This Funding

Given workload demands and other campus obligations, KSU tenured faculty have limited time to advance their scholarship/creative activity through travel, concentrated research and creative activity, and renewal through concentrated work on a special project related to teaching, scholarship/creative activity, or professional service. When tenured faculty have taken leaves in the past, they have either taken an unpaid leave, received funding for a single course release or a summer course stipend, or decided not to teach during a summer term and funded travel with their money. This competitive funding award program is intended to provide funding to assist tenured faculty in taking a leave for faculty development for an entire semester, either during the academic year or summer semester. The Tenured Faculty Enhancement Leave Program provides a $10,000 stipend, either in lieu of the recipient's salary during the leave or as a summer stipend. If the leave is taken during fall or spring semester, departments can use the faculty member's salary savings to fund a full-time temporary replacement. If the stipend is used during the summer, the recipient must devote the entire summer to the leave and not teach any courses or participate in other KSU-related activities. A complete description of the leave program, including application materials and criteria, is available at this link (NOTE: This is a Rich Text Format, rtf, document). The deadline for receipt of proposals is Friday, March 30, 2007.

2007-2008 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Team Funding Awards

List of Previous Recipients and Their Project Descriptions

Annually, CETL offers seven (7) funding awards for participants in its Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Team (STLT) initiative. Based upon a successful program at Portland State University, STLT is designed to help facilitate and recognize faculty endeavors to do research on teaching and learning as it occurs in higher education settings, including research on student learning designed to meet KSU's Assurance of Learning (AOL) initiatives. Although participants work autonomously on their project throughout the year, they also attend several team meetings to advance their own research through discussion, problem solving, and the sharing of ideas. Through a community of scholars, this interdisciplinary approach to research can both facilitate research and help keep projects on track through collegial support and encouragement. Benefits of the program include: team support, resource and technical support, a writing retreat offered to STLT participants to assist with project completion, and travel support for presentations at professional meetings.

Funds will be awarded to faculty members (as teams or individuals) conducting research in the fields of scholarship of teaching and learning at Kennesaw State University. Accepted projects are awarded a total of $1,000. A complete description of the program, including application materials and criteria, is available at this link (NOTE: This is a Rich Text Format, rtf, document). The deadline for receipt of proposals is August 27, 2007.

CARET (Creative Activities and Research Experiences for Teams)

The Creative Activities and Research Experiences for Teams (CARET) program is designed to enhance undergraduate involvement and experience in research and creative activity. This funding program is designed to encourage and support faculty engagement in research or creative activity with undergraduate student collaborators using a team approach over two semesters (Summer-Fall 2007). The research or creative activity can be one project for all team members or multiple projects across students. Although it is not required, faculty in departments with graduate programs are strongly encouraged to include Graduate Research Assistants as mentors. Summer 2007 Undergraduate Scholarship & Creative Activity Institute (SUSCAI)
W
e are soliciting proposals from interdisciplinary collaborative faculty teams for themed Summer Undergraduate Scholarship & Creative Activity Institutes (SUSCAI). We will be able to fund up to two institutes for summer 2007. The SUSCAI should be designed to provide an intensive scholarship experience for undergraduates, help the students develop skills necessary for research and help prepare them for graduate or professional schools. The Institute should be designed to train to do meaningful scholarship or creative activity on a themed project of interest to the faculty team. The nature of the themed SUSCAI is completely up to the discretion of the faculty team involved. The themed SUSCAI may or may not include an actual course to be taken by the students but should include a series of seminars that are focused on expanding undergraduate research and creative activity skills both within their major and across disciplines and focusing on communal discussions of articles related to the SUSCAI theme. To encourage an interdisciplinary focus in the SUSCAI, a minimum of two faculty from different disciplines, especially across colleges, should collaborate such that the cohesive theme chosen is inclusive of a multi-discipline perspective beyond those characterized by an individual college. A complete description of the program, including application materials and criteria, is available at this link (NOTE: This is a Rich Text Format, rtf, document). The deadline for receipt of proposals is January 16, 2007 for Summer 2007 proposals.
