Creating a Space for YAL with LGBT Content in our Personal Reading: Creating a Place for LGBT Students in Our Classrooms
Dr. Katie Mason & Dr. Dede Yow

Event Description:

Nearly two-thirds of students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) report feeling unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation and/or gender expression. Sadly, the harassment they face is not just initiated by fellow students, as various members of the school community make (or silently condone through inaction) homophobic remarks such as “faggot” or “dyke” or “that’s so gay.”

Future teachers must be prepared to become trusted adults for all their students and initiate positive changes in their classroom and school communities regarding differences in sexual orientation and gender expression. Young adult literature (YAL) with LGBT content is one possibility for initiating those changes. The verisimilitude of these texts and their ability to act as windows into experiences that may be unfamiliar to the reader make them ideal resources to equip both teachers and teens to create, maintain, and defend a safe community for people who represent all sexual orientations and gender identities/expressions.

This reading and subsequent discussion will ...
• reveal local in-service and pre-service teachers’ perspectives on reading and teaching YA literature with LGBT content,
• identify YA texts with LGBT content that are “must-reads,” including those that focus specifically on gender expression, a topic rarely acknowledged in YA literature, and
• invite participants to consider concerns about teaching YA literature with LGBT content and suggest specific ways for including and examining it in the curriculum.

Dr. Ginny Zhan (Chair of KSU's Institutional Review Board) and Dr. Tom Pusateri (CETL Associate Director) will lead a discussion on the ethical issues faculty should consider when conducting SoTL research, such as obtaining informed consent from students, avoiding conflicts in your dual role as a teacher and researcher, maintaining confidentiality of student information. They will also suggest strategies for submitting a successful IRB application for SoTL research.

Book Club: Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II
Dr. Linda M. Johnston, Dr. Dede Yow and Dr. Harold Wingfield
Event Description:
Please join Harold Wingfield, Professor of Political Science, Linda Johnston, Director of the Master of Science in Conflict Management and Dede Yow, CETL Fellow for Diversity Across the Curriculum for a discussion of Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II by Douglas A. Blackmon.

Reviewers write the following about the book:

Wall Street Journal bureau chief Blackmon gives a groundbreaking and disturbing account of a sordid chapter in American history—the lease (essentially the sale) of convicts to commercial interests between the end of the 19th century and well into the 20th. Usually, the criminal offense was loosely defined vagrancy or even changing employers without permission. The initial sentence was brutal enough; the actual penalty, reserved almost exclusively for black men, was a form of slavery in one of hundreds of forced labor camps operated by state and county governments, large corporations, small time entrepreneurs and provincial farmers. . . . Blackmon's book reveals in devastating detail the legal and commercial forces that created this neoslavery along with deeply moving and totally appalling personal testimonies of survivors. Every incident in this book is true, he writes; one wishes it were not so.
From Publishers Weekly

“A powerful and eye-opening account of a crucial but unremembered chapter of American history. Blackmon’s magnificent research paints a devastating picture of the ugly and outrageous practices that kept tens of thousands of black Americans enslaved until the onset of World War II. Slavery by Another Name is a passionate, highly impressive, and hugely important book.”
—David J. Garrow, author of Bearing the Cross: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and winner of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Biography

“Douglas Blackmon’s Slavery by Another Name is an American holocaust that dare not speak its name, a rivetingly written, terrifying history of six decades of racial degradation in the service of white supremacy and cheap labor. It should be required reading.”
—David Levering Lewis, professor, New York University, and winner of the 1994 and 2001 Pulitzer Prizes for Biography

“Doug Blackmon has exposed an awful truth about the continued abuse of power and continued post-slavery exploitation of the poor into the twentieth century.”
—Andrew Young, aide to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations

Film: Banished: American Ethnic Cleansings
Dr. Linda M. Johnston, Dr. Dede Yow and Dr. Harold Wingfield

Event Description:
A hundred years ago, in communities across the U.S., white residents forced thousands of black families to flee their homes. Even a century later, these towns remain almost entirely white. BANISHED tells the story of three of these communities and their black descendants, who return to learn their shocking histories.

In Forsyth County, Georgia, where a thousand black residents were expelled, the film explores the question of land fraudulently taken, and follows some descendants in their quest to uncover the real story of their family's land. In Pierce City, Missouri, a man has designed his own creative form of reparation—he wishes to disinter the remains of his great-grandfather, who was buried there before the banishment. And in Harrison, Arkansas, home to the headquarters of the Ku Klux Klan, a white community struggles with their town's legacy of hate.

By investigating this little-known chapter in American history, BANISHED also takes a contemporary look at the legacy of racial cleansing. Through conversations with current residents and the descendants of those who were driven out, the film contemplates questions of privilege, responsibility, denial, healing, reparations and identity.

What can be done to redress past injustices? What is the ongoing impact of the expulsions on families and communities today? In the stories of black families whose land and livelihood were stolen, the film illustrates the limits of the American legal system and the need for creative forms of repair. By introducing these families and the white communities who forced them out, BANISHED raises the question of responsibility for past wrongs and what is involved in righting them. .

Demonstrating The Quality & Significance of Administration and Leadership
Dr. Valerie Whittlesey, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs & Professor of Psychology

Event Description:
This session is designed to explore ways faculty can provide evidence of the quality and significance of their administration and leadership activities. Documenting the administration and leadership activities are often seen as more challenging than documenting effective teaching or research and creative activity. Because the new KSU tenure and promotion guidelines require that such evidence be provided by faculty with administrative duties who are considered for tenure and promotion, this session is intended to address ways this might be accomplished. Participants will discuss what is meant by the quality and significance of the administration and leadership, and how it might be documented in the realm of faculty roles in the institution, in our disciplines, and in the external community.
