Project 1: Ischemic Stroke Biomarkers

 

Strokes are the leading cause of severe long-term disability and the third leading cause of death in the United States. According to the World Health Organization, there are 700,000 strokes in the U.S. annually and 21 million worldwide.

 

Prof. Dambinova has identified novel biomarkers emitted by the brain into the bloodstream, where they can be detected. These markers, the NR2 peptide and the NR2 antibody, greatly improve the diagnostic certainty of identifying ischemic stroke vs non-stroke disorders at ED. Ischemia is a restriction in blood supply, generally due to factors in the blood vessels with resultant damage or dysfunction of affected tissue. The research of clinical utility of NR2 biomarkers to assess acute and chronic ischemic strokes is performing in collaboration with Stanford University (Dr. Albers) and DeKalb Medical (Dr. Weissman).

 

Brain-Borne Biomarkers

Glutamate receptors degradation underlying cerebral ischemia due to thrombotic/embolic processes in the brain.
