Fifteen years ago, a collaborative, community partnership developed between Kennesaw State University (KSU) and MUST Ministries to provide affordable, accessible, and quality health care to the homeless, uninsured, and/or underserved populations in our community while educating the future health care workforce by providing culturally-competent, quality health services to vulnerable populations. The collaborative partnership has long served the community by providing much needed health services to these populations. Until August 2010, this effort was accomplished with a small budget in a single-wide trailer located at the emergency night shelter at MUST Ministries Elizabeth Inn Campus through volunteers in the community and the KSU WellStar College of Health and Human Services faculty and staff.
In August 2010, the clinic moved into the new MUST Ministries facility so that the clinic could better meet the demands and needs of the community. In fiscal year 2011, the clinic provided services to approximately 2,600 clients. Funding limitations for operating and the outdated, small facility vastly limited the clinic’s ability to meet the increasing need for health services among these individuals and families. The new facility includes six exam rooms, a health education/counseling room, and other necessary support areas. Through the partnership between the KSU College of Health and Human Services and MUST Ministries, opportunities have been established to strengthen and prepare a much needed health care workforce that is culturally competent at the point of service while the community receives valuable health services for vulnerable populations.
