Basic Computer Maintenance Tips

small logo

Computers work better if you follow some simple maintenance rules. Although there are other maintenance hints, these are the most common.

  • Be sure and empty your RECYCLE BIN on a regular basis. To do this, simply click on the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and then click on "Empty recycle bin."

  • Temporary files will build up in your computer. It is a good idea to get rid of these on a regular basis, because it can slow down your computer. Since there are so many different operating systems (Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP), go to "My Computer" and click on "Help." Click on "Help Topics" and type in "temporary files." Then follow directions on how to delete "temporary files."

  • Temporary Internet files will also build up in your computer. If you are using Internet Explorer, go to "Tools" and click on "Internet Options." Look for "Temporary Internet Files" and click on "delete files." Also look for "Clear History" and delete these files, but you don't have do this as frequently.

  • Nothing will irritate your classmates and instructor more than if you send an email or attachment with a computer virus. So invest in an Antivirus program for your computer. KSU provides Symantec Antivirus for its students at https://its.kennesaw.edu/downloads/ - Whatever antivirus solution you choose, make sure you keep it updated, as new viruses are appearing every day.
