Nursing in Faith Communities


CONTACT HOURS = 45 (CEU's = 4.5)

 

Description of Course:

An introduction to Faith Community Nursing designed to sensitize nurses to the array of issues related to Faith Community Nursing or Health Ministry and the role and responsibilities of the Faith Community Nurse. Emphasis is placed on models of faith community nursing, diverse faith traditions, persons with special healthcare needs, legal and ethical issues, health promotion, and disease prevention.

Course Overview:

This 45-hour course is designed to provide nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a basic understanding of nursing in faith communities and its roles and responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on learning strategies and techniques to meet the health and spiritual needs of diverse populations across the lifespan and developing inter-collegial peer support systems. In addition, students will learn to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate appropriate interventions based on assessment findings, and presentation of health data to groups. Successful completion of this course will qualify an individual to assume the role of a Faith Community Nurse.

    • Overview of Health, Healing, and Wholeness in the Faith Community
    • History and Philosophy of Parish Nursing

  • Week 2:
    • Theological Components of Congregational Health
    • Diverse Faith Beliefs / Traditions and Concerns (Panel discussion)

  • Week 3:
    • Wholistic Health Across the Lifespan: Children, Adolescents, Young Adults, Middle Adults, and Older Adults
    • Assessment: Individual, Family and Congregational

  • Week 4:
    • Integrator of Faith and Health: Spiritual Caregiving

  • Week 5:
    • Starting or Enhancing a Congregational Health Ministry
    • Functioning Within a Congregational Context (Panel discussion)

  • Week 6:
    • Prayer and Worship Leader
    • Health Literacy, Promotion and Wellness


  • Week 7:
    • Personal Health Counselor and Support Group Facilitator
    • Health Educator

  • Week 8:
    • Social Justice: Collaborator and Health Advocate

    • DisAbility Awareness

    • Sustaining a Faith Based Nursing Practice

Course Objectives:

  1. Describe various models of faith community nursing.
  2. Understand philosophical and theoretical foundations of faith community nursing.
  3. Differentiate professional roles in faith community nursing .
  4. Identify specific health needs of persons across the life-span.
  5. Identify diverse faith traditions.
  6. Describe common chronic health problems and identify appropriate interventions in the context of a faith community.
  7. Describe the importance of liaisons within the community and coalition building .
  8. Describe elements in program planning and evaluation in a faith community.
  9. Describe and discuss the needs of special populations within faith community nursing.
  10. Describe the levels of prevention, primary, secondary, and tertiary as they relate to faith community nursing.
  11. Understand the legal issues, ethical issues, and documentation in faith community nursing.
