Omega Phi Alpha’s history at Kennesaw State University began in October 2005, when charter president Liz New contacted Heather Pritchard (an OPA sister at Georgia Tech) about bringing a chapter to the KSU campus. Heather then put Liz in contact with Ginger McGarity, the National Vice President of Expansions, and an interest group was formed. The women who were members of this initial interest group hosted an information night about Omega Phi Alpha on February 22, 2006, and the number of interested students more than doubled. On March 16, Omega Phi Alpha officially recognized the group as KSU Colony, and the colonization process formally began.

Throughout spring semester of 2006, the KSU colonists held meetings, hosted fundraisers, and organized service projects, working towards the completion of colonization requirements, which would recognize them as an official OPA chapter. From July 19-23, 2006, six members of KSU Colony attended Omega Phi Alpha’s National Convention in Hartford, Connecticut, and became the first OPA colony to receive the National Travel Award. Ginger also traveled from Arizona to Georgia that August to attend KSU’s colonization retreat at Red Top Mountain State Park.

Fall 2006 proved to be an even more eventful time in Omega Phi Alpha’s history at Kennesaw State. From September 5-7, the soon-to-be sisters hosted their first rush and extended bids to 35 women, who became members of the Alpha pledge class. OPA continued to make their presence known on campus and eagerly looked forward to the end of the colonization period and the beginning of life as the newest chapter of Omega Phi Alpha.

On October 15, 2006, members of Omega Phi Alpha’s National Executive Board (including National President Amy McConnell) and sisters from six different chapters welcomed the KSU colonists into sisterhood as they became active sisters of Alpha Zeta Chapter. Twenty-two founding mothers were initiated in the ceremony, in the culmination of almost a year’s hard work. The end of 2006 also saw the activation of the Alpha pledge class with 27 new sisters, more than doubling Alpha Zeta Chapter’s roster.

In the summer of 2007, two voting delegates and three other active sisters traveled to National Convention in Jacksonville, Florida. Alpha Zeta began fall semester 2007 by welcoming their Beta pledge class, and added 21 new sisters to the chapter by December. The chapter took on its first ever spring pledge class in 2008, with the Gamma class.
