The International Academy for Disability Rights serves to create meaningful social change to promote international human rights for people with disabilities. Kennesaw State University is the only university in the world to partner directly with the Secretariat of the African Decade of Persons with Disabilities. The African Decade of  Persons with Disabilities is an initiative of the non-governmental community of Africa in cooperation with member States and Governments of the Organization of African Unity, serving to further the equalization of opportunities of persons with disabilities.

Through implementation of the Global Center’s Business Model, the Academy provides worldwide training and consulting, business and policy development, cultural exchange and education programs to positively impact those with disabilities.

Facts about Persons of Disability in Africa

At least 60 million people in Africa are disabled by malnutrition and diseases, environmental hazards, natural disasters, traffic and industrial accidents, civil conflict and war
As a result of increased endurance, there are more and more children surviving with disabilities
The number of elderly people with disabilities is rising

“Increasing visibility, building self-esteem, and developing leadership among young people with disabilities is critical to the Decade’s success and sport is the key.”

Shuaib Chalklen, former CEO, Secretariat of the African Decade of Persons with Disabilities

The vast majority of Africans with disabilities are excluded from schools, work opportunities, and participation in poverty reduction programs. This exclusion virtually guarantees that persons with disabilities will live out their lives as victims of marginalization and isolation, the social stigma associated with disability. Often begging is the sole means of survival, and those with disabilities become the poorest of the poor. They have inadequate access to health services, which can result in serious health conditions and deterioration of the quality of life.
