HPS Faculty Recognition

Dr. Beverly Mitchell: recipient of the distinguished Honor Award by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance at their April meeting in Fort Worth, Texas. This prestigious national award recognizes individuals “of personal integrity who exemplify the spirit of devoted service to the professions and who have, by their leadership and industry, made an outstanding and noteworthy contribution to the advancement of health, physical education, recreation, or dance.” Dr. Mitchell’s demonstrated leadership and commitment to the health and physical education profession spans state to national levels. Her extensive experience and contributions in teacher education and program accreditation have made a lasting impact on our profession.

Dr. Kandice Johnson: recipient of the 2007 Georgia Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (GAHPERD) College/University Health Educator of the Year.

Dr. John McLester: received fellowship status in the American College of Sports Medicine at the 2007 annual meeting. This honor is bestowed to members who exhibit a deep and ongoing interest and dedication to the goals and long-range activities of the college through service and scholarly achievement.

Mrs. Susan Whitlock: Georgia recipient of the 2007 National Association for Girls and Women in Sport Pathfinder Award. This award provides national recognition to women who have demonstrated continuous dedication to the advocacy, recruitment, and enhancement of girls and women in sports and sport leadership.

Dr. David Mitchell: recipient of the 2007 KSU Foundation Prize for Scholarship - Flame of Excellence from the Wellstar College of Health and Human Services (WCHHS) for his article: Nonconscious priming after 17 Years: Invulnerable implicit memory? Psychological Science, 2006, 17, 925-929.

Dr. Charles Ash: Invited to attend the Oxford Roundtable at Oxford University, England on April 2-7, 2006 on the topic: "Nutrition and Health"; recipient of the 2005 - Distinguished Administrator Award from the National Association for Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education (NAHPEHE); President, 2002-2003, of the National Association for Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education (NAHPEHE); recipient of the 2002Distinguished Service Award from the College and University Administrators Council (CUAC) of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD).

Dr. Mitchell Collins: recipient of the 2006 KSU Foundation Prize - Flame of Excellence from the Wellstar College of Health and Human Services (WCHHS) for his article: "Effect of race and musculoskeletal development on the accuracy of air plethysmography"; recipient of the 2005 KSU Foundation Distinguished Professor Award (Oral History); 2004 semi-finalist for the KSU Foundation Distinguished Professor Award; recipient of the 2003 KSU Distinguished Scholarship Award.

: recipient of the 2005 KSU WellStar College of Health and Human Services (WCHHS) Distinguished Scholarship Award and semi-finalist for the 2005 KSU Distinguished Scholarship Award; recipient of the 2004 KSU Foundation Prize - Flame of Excellence for her article: "A Qualitative Exploration of Health Behaviors and the Associated Factors Among University Students from Different Cultures" with co-author Mark Kittleson, Southern Illinois University.

Mrs. Lola Hartness: recipient of the 2004 KSU Philip Preston Community Leadership Award.

Mrs. Amy Howton: recipient of the 2004 Georgia Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (GAHPERD) College/University Physical Educator of the Year.

Dr. Jin Wang: recipient of the Southern District Scholar of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (SDAAHPERD) for 2004-2005. Dr. Wang was the recipient of the 2003 KSU WellStar College of Health and Human Services (WCHHS) Distinguished Scholar Award and semi-finalist for the 2003 KSU Distinguished Scholarship Award.

Dr. Gail Webster: 2005 semi-finalist for the KSU Distinguished Service Award and 2004 finalist for the KSU Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Tom Donovan: recipient of the 2004 KSU WellStar College of Health and Human Services (WCHHS) Distinguished Teaching Award; semi-finalist for the 2004, 2005, and 2006 KSU Distinguished Teaching Award; recipient of the 2002 GAHPERD College/University Physical Educator of the Year.

Kenneth Burchette Sr.
Kenneth Burchette Sr. was the recipient of KSU's 2008 National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) HPE Major of the Year at the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX Convention for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD). Kenneth was also selected as KSU's Outstanding Student Teacher in the P-12 Programs for the Spring Semester of 2008.
Adam Johnson
Adam Johnson was the recipient of the Health and Physical Education P-12 Outstanding Senior Award for 2008.
Jeremy Edwards
Jeremy Edwards was the sole recipient of the Virginia Clonts Memorial Scholarship for 2007. The scholarship was available from the Beta Alpha Chapter Of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators. It was open to students who will be student teaching in the fall 2007. Jeremy was also selected as the 2007 Teresa Russell Scholar. The Teresa Russell Memorial Scholarship is in honor of Ms. Russell's giving nature and her commitment to education as a significant means of reaching one's human potential. Mr. Edwards was also the recipient of the Bob M. Prillaman Scholarship. The Bob M. Prillaman Scholarship Fund was established in 1989 by Caraustar Industries to honor Mr. Bob Prillaman. Full or part time students with good academic standing, showing academic promise, pursuing a program of study leading to a degree, and demonstrating financial need, are eligible.
Judy Cross
Judy Cross was selected as the recipient of the 2007 GAHPERD Undergraduate Student Scholarship and KSU's 2007 National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) HPE Major of the Year at the Baltimore, MD Convention for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD). Mrs. Cross was also recognized as the Outstanding Senior Student in the Health and Physical Education program at KSU.
Jeanne Huck
Jeanne Huck, a KSU HPE graduate, was named the Georgia Associaton of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (GAHPERD) Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year for 2006 and was also named the Cobb County Physical Education Teacher of the Year in the spring of 2006. Ms. Huck's program at Chalker Elementary received the GAHPERD Award of Excellence for 2005.
David Albert
David Albert (Sport Management) was awarded Honor's Scholar status by the Honor's Council at KSU's summer 2006 graduation ceremony. David was also the Sport Management Student of the Year for 2005-2006.
Tracy Steinlight
Tracy Steinlight was one of only two recipients to receive the Virginia Clonts Memorial Scholarship. Gary Whitney
Gary Whitney was selected as the Outstanding Senior in Health and Physical Education at KSU for 2006.
Lauren Lerma
Lauren Lerma was selected as the 2005 Teresa Russell Scholar. The Teresa Russell Memorial Scholarship is in honor of Ms. Russell's giving nature and her commitment to education as a significant means of reaching one's human potential.
Tara Martz
Tara Martz was selected as the 2005 KSU National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) HPE Major of the Year at the Chicago Convention for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD).
Megan Baxter
Megan Baxter, a Health and Physical Education major, received the 2004 Toby Hopper Endowed Scholarship. Megan is the mother of three children and is a nationally certified Water Fitness Instructor. Megan plans to teach at either the elementary or middle school level upon graduation.
Rich McGuire
Rich McGuire was selected as the 2004 KSU National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) HPE Major of the Year at the New Orleans Convention for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD).
A-Steinmetz
Allison Steinmetz, a Health and Physical Education major, received the University of Georgia Higher Education System's 2003 Charles McDaniel Scholarship. Ms. Steinmetz was one of only three students from all colleges and universities in Georgia to receive this honor.
Mrs. Camilla Glosson &  Eric Pezzello
Mrs. Camilla Glosson and Eric Pezzello. Mrs. Glosson is the Physical Education teacher at Acworth Elementary School in Cobb County and was the Runner-up for the Outstanding Collaborating Teacher of Fall 2002 in the Bagwell College of Education. Mr. Pezzello, a Health and Physical Education major, was a semi-finalist for the Outstanding Student Teacher of Fall 2002 in the Bagwell College of Education.
Marjo&Linda

Marjo Venalainen received the GAHPERD Undergraduate Student Scholarship award at the 2003 GAHPERD Convention in Savannah, GA.

Ms. Venalainen was also selected as the 2003 KSU National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) HPE Major of the Year.

  Sandy Nixon received the Outstanding Student Presentation Award for Physical Education
with her presentation of "The Body Board Game" at the 2002 GAHPERD Convention.
