Core Performance Standards for Admission Progression

The School of Nursing has adopted core preformance standards for admission and progression within the nursing major. These standards identify the abilities and skills necessary to perform in an independent manner. If a student believes that he or she cannot meet one or more of the standards without accommodations or modifications, the nursing program will determine, on an individual basis, whether or not necessary accommodations or modifications can be made reasonably.

ISSUE STANDARD EXAMPLES
Critical Thinking Sufficient for clinical judgment Identity cause/effect relationships in clinical situations. Develop care plans
Interpersonal Interact with individuals, families, & groups with various social, emotional, cultural & intellectual backgrounds Establish rapport with patients/clients and colleagues
Communication Interaction with others in verbal & written form Explain treatment procedures, initiate health teaching, documents & interpret nurse actions & patient/client responses
Mobility Sufficient to move from room to room & maneuver in small spaces Mobile in patient's room, work spaces & treatment areas. Administer cardiopulmonary procedures
Motor Skills Sufficient to provide safe & effective care Calibrate & use equipment, position patient/client
Hearing Sufficient to monitor & assess health needs Hear monitor alarm, emergency signals, ausculatory sounds, cries for help
Visual Sufficient for necessary observation & assessment care Observes patient/client responses
Tactile Sufficient for physical assessment Perform palpation, functions of physical examination & those related to therapeutic intervention.
