Growing numbers of immigrants from Mexico and Latin America are challenging the healthcare system to provide services for patients who come from other cultures and do not speak English as their primary language.  The School of Nursing and the KSU International Center collaborate to offer two study abroad courses in Oaxaca, Mexico each year.  Undergraduate students enroll in NURS 4426 while graduate nurse practitioner students receive credit for clinical practice while working with primary care providers in public health clinics.  

The program in Oaxaca offers nursing students opportunities to learn more about the culture, language and healthcare system of Mexico.  During this intensive two-week program, students live with Mexican families and work in clinics and hospitals in the colonial city of Oaxaca.  Field trips to locations both within the city and into the countryside provide opportunities to learn more about the history, traditional healing practices, indigenous peoples and art of the people in the State of Oaxaca.
