Special areas of interest in teaching and research are media effects, media literacy, visual communication, ethics in media operations, using media to grieve, and effective teaching methods in the classroom. Prior to becoming a professor, Dr. Aust's mass media experience included public relations work in a non-profit social service agency, news writing, and photography He has his Ph.D. in mass communication from the Univ. of Alabama , 1993. Master's in telecommunication from Indiana Univ. 1985. Bachelor's in psychology from the Univ. of Pittsburgh , 1975. Born and raised in Johnstown , Pennsylvania . Previous professional service as a child abuse caseworker (3 years) and a drug and alcohol education specialist (2 years) in Pennsylvania . Single, no kids. Hobbies: biking, camping, going to the movies, playing the drums.
