Highlights 2004

Assistant Professor Dr. Barbara Gainey presented a poster at "The digital revolution: The impact of digital media and information technologies conference," University of South Carolina, in October 2004.

• Assistant Professor Dr. Barbara Gainey is the advisor of the newly chartered Kennesaw State University chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). Dr. Gainey was instrumental in chartering this student organization in September 2004, with 38 members in its first year.

• Associate Professor Dr. Katherine Kinnick published a chapter, "Advertising Responses to September 11: The Crisis Response Ad as a Rhetorical Genre," in Robert E. Denton, Jr., (Ed.) Language, Symbols and the Media: Communication in the Aftermath of the World Trade Center Attack (2004) by Transaction Publishers.

• Associate Professor Dr. Katherine Kinnick published an article in Public Relations Review, 29 (2003) "How Corporate America Grieves: Responses to September 11th in Public Relations Advertising."

• Associate Professor Dr. Katherine Kinnick co-presented "Re-examining the Senior Thesis: Ideas and Alternatives for Undergraduate Capstone Papers" at the Governor's Teaching Fellow Conference in Athens, Georgia, September 24, 2004.

• Assistant Professor Dr. Barbara Gainey presented a paper at Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) annual conference, on "Crisis management's new role in educational settings," at Toronto, Canada, in August 2004.

• Distinguished Professor Leonard Witt, as chair of the Civic Journalism Interest Group in the AEJMC, co-organized The Exploring the Fusion Power of Public and Participatory Journalism Conference, August 3, 2004, Toronto. Details can be found at PJNet.org, which is Professor Witt's weblog for public and participatory journalism.

• Distinguished Professor Leonard Witt, along with Professor Carole Mauge-Lewis of the Department of Visual Arts, held a reception on April 28, 2004, for a public demonstration of their students' work from the Marietta Experience, a multi-media Web site looking at the diversity and complexity of community life in the city of Marietta, Georgia.

• Distinguished Professor Leonard Witt delivered an address on "Voices in the Media: The Ethical Implications of Choosing Sources," as part of the lecture series organized by Kennesaw State University's Institute of Leadership, Ethics and Character, on April 27, 2004.

• Assistant Professor Nikhil Moro, in October 2003, had a refereed chapter accepted for publication in a book co-edited by Sandy Utt and Elinor Grusin, scheduled to be published by University Press of America at an unscheduled date.

• Assistant Professor Barbara S. Gainey participated in a poster session at the 11th Annual Georgia Conference on College & University Teaching held at Kennesaw State University, in 2004. Her topic was Creating a Virtual Jigsaw Puzzle to Engage Students in Learning.

• Assistant Professor Barbara S. Gainey's team received national recognition for curriculum products created through the National Science Foundation-funded SC ATE Center of Excellence, in 2004. Dr. Gainey was responsible for editing, designing and producing these curriculum products.

• The bi-annual meeting of the department's External Advisory Committee was held at the KSU Center on April 2, 2004, followed by a banquet. The meeting was attended by Tina Bendock, Terena Campagna, Sara Eby-Ebersole, Kimberly Englehardt, Jennifer Jiles and Kelvin Davis, besides Assistant Dean of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences Helen Ridley and members of the department's full-time faculty.

• Assistant Professor Keisha L. Hoerrner co-authored an article in the January 2004 issue of the E-Journal of Ethical Leadership. She is also co-editor of this new interactive, scholarly journal.
