I love teaching Media Studies courses such as Concepts in New Media, where my students discuss virtuality, cyberspace and Web design, and Media Law, where they learn about the legal frameworks of press freedom. I also teach Senior Thesis, News Writing and Contemporary Media Issues. I am enthused by the emergent dynamics of the mass media, and by the impact these dynamics have on democratic processes. I am also enthused by young people's interest in building media careers. The academy gives me the creative freedom and opportunity to develop diverse perspectives. I progressed to media scholarship after spending many years in journalism in India, where I served community
as well as national newspapers. Political issues of the Indian subcontinent, and their coverage by the American media, engage my otherwise eclectic
reading interests. My inspiration? Surely my parents, for constantly reminding me of the logic in the Indian credo of "simple living, high thinking." They live in Mysore, a charming city in southern India where I was raised. My sister, Shylaja Moro, two years younger, is a nun, or brahmacharini. She has chosen renunciation as her "path to the truth." In my spare time I swim, hike the north Georgia mountains, or surf the Web. I help run a small charity as a tribute to my sister, which tells you what I do with my spare money. The cruel ways of the meat industry appall me, which tells you why I am vegetarian. I love the white of the South Atlantic beaches, which tells you where I head for my vacations. A quotation that amuses me to no end is attributed to Niels Bohr: "Never express yourself more clearly than you are able to think." And did I invite you to visit my rather quirky personal website or check out some recent posts at Professor Len Witt's blog?
