My favorite Media Studies course is Concepts in New Media, where I discuss virtuality, cyberspace and Web design. I also teach Media Law, News Writing and Senior Thesis. Besides the spark in my students' eyes, what cranks me up is the dynamic nature of the convergent and emergent media.

I enjoy my job for its reward of creative freedom and for the opportunity it gives me to debate and develop diverse perspectives. Scholarship surrounding the communication media was, for me, a progression of sorts, after I'd worked for several years as a newspaper journalist in India, serving community dailies as well as national. I continue to indulge, in various ways, my rather eclectic interest in political issues concerning the Indian subcontinent, and in how the media cover those issues.

My inspiration? Surely my parents, for their self-effacing simplicity as much as for their other successes. They live in Mysore, a charming city in southern India where I was raised. My two-years-younger sister, Shylaja, is a nun, or brahmacharini. She has chosen renunciation as her "path to the truth."

I enjoy swimming and browsing the Web, which tells you what I like to do with my spare time. I am a trustee of a small charity run as a tribute to my sister, which tells you what I do with my spare money. I am appalled by how the meat industry treats animals, which tells you why I am totally vegetarian. America's sparkling South Atlantic beaches are among my favorite vacation destinations.

Besides teaching at KSU, I am also a Ph.D. candidate at the Ohio State University, Columbus, where my research addresses communication issues concerning the Internet such as freedom of expression, libel and regulation.

A quotation that intrigues and amuses me to no end is one attributed to Niels Bohr: "Never express yourself more clearly than you are able to think."

And did I invite you to visit my rather quirky personal website or check out my recent posts at Professor Len Witt's blog?
