Dr. Beverly F. Mitchell is Associate Dean of the Bagwell College of Education at Kennesaw State University and Professor of Health, Physical Education and Sport Science. She received her B.S. degree from Wesleyan College in Macon, GA, the M.A. degree from Michigan State University, and the Ph.D. degree from Florida State University. Prior to her appointment at KSU in 1985, Dr. Mitchell was a member of the Wesleyan College faculty over a period of 13 years following one year of teaching at the middle school level in the Volusia County Schools, Florida. At KSU, she has served in additional roles as Acting Director of Graduate Studies in Education and Interim Chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
Dr. Mitchell was appointed to the position of Folio Coordinator for the review of undergraduate programs in NCATE accredited colleges and universities across the nation offering teacher education certification in physical education. She held this position for several years and conducted yearly national workshops before assuming a similar position for the review of graduate programs. Currently, she is a member of the NCATE Board of Examiners and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission Board of Examiners. She maintains active roles and leadership positions in state, district and national organizations that serve professional educators. Her scholarly presentations at district and national professional meetings on the subjects of assessment, accreditation, and learning reflect three of Dr. Mitchells specialty areas. As the current coordinator of the NASPE Advanced Standards, she conducts annual workshops on the standards and assists NCATE in the training of new reviewers.
After 30 years of teaching, Dr. Mitchell believes that her greatest contribution to others still resides in the classroom and considers her students to be the most rewarding part of her work. Dr. Mitchells special interests after teaching are serving her professional colleagues and the University. She has chaired the University Promotion and Tenure Committee and served on the University Senate, Undergraduate Policies and Curriculum Committee, Graduate Policies and Curriculum Committee, and the Faculty Development and Awards Committee. In her department and college she has been a member and chaired many of the faculty committees related to program admission, promotion and tenure, curriculum, and searches to fill new faculty positions. She co-chaired with Dr. Vicki McLain, the Director of the Center for Field Experiences and Partnerships, the preparations for the 2004 NCATE/PSC accreditation visit.
For her service and contributions to others, Dr. Mitchell received an award from the National Academic Advising Association, the KSU Distinguished Service Award, the College of Health and Human Services Distinguished Service Award, the KSU Alumni Association Betty L. Siegel Award, the NASPE Joy of Effort Award, the GAHPERD and Southern District AAHPERD Honor Award, and the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association for Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education. |
