Kennesaw State University holds a partnership with the following school systems.  This means that you may request placement for student teaching in any of these partnership school systems and KSU will provide a University Supervisor to work with you.           Paulding County.

1.    How are placements decided?

The Office of Field Experiences reviews the Student Teacher Application and the schools that the student requests.  Then the OFE sends the requests to the school systems.  The school systems make the actual decision of placement based on individual schools’ willingness to accept student teachers and the willingness and availability of teachers in the schools to work with student teachers.  The KSU student and the OFE request placement, but the final decision is made by the school system.

2.    Do I have an opportunity to request a specific school?

Yes.  Choose ONE school district, then you may request up to four schools in that district for placement.  Remember if you request four very popular schools, you may not get placement in any of those schools.  You will then be placed in the requested system(s). The OFE sends your requests to the school systems, and although the systems try to honor the requests, sometimes they are not able to do so.  Remember, your four requests are only REQUESTS.  The school systems make the final decision according to their needs.  PLEASE

AVOID REQUESTING SCHOOLS IN MORE THAN ONE SCHOOL DISTRICT.  You will limit your opportunities

3.    What can I do to help my chances of getting placement in one of the schools I requested?

Go to each school system’s web site that is a possible placement for you and look at the location of the different schools.  Many times students overlook great school placements because the schools are simply unfamiliar.  (Marietta City School District is a good example.)  Also, go to each school’s website and review the profile of the school.  Good placements are everywhere. Investigate schools that are not in your county of residence but are somewhat easy to get to. At Risk schools are great places to student teach and great places to get jobs!   Step outside your comfort zone and you will find many, wonderful schools.  Please do not call principals or other administrators or drop by the school for an unannounced visit to promote your placement in that school.

4.    I would like to go back to my high school (middle school, elementary school) alma mater.  Is that possible?

Yes, if you have not been a student in that school in the last ten years.

5.    I live in Walker County.  Is it possible to do my student there?

Notice that Walker County is not one of KSU’s partnership schools, so placement in Walker County School District is not a choice.  You should speak to Ms. Janice Traylor in the OFE to discuss your options.

6.    I have a friend who goes to Georgia Southern College and State University.  She would like to live with me and do her student teaching in Cherokee County.  Is that possible?

KSU is not able to honor that request.  We struggle to find University Supervisors for our own students and cannot take on supervision of other universities’ students.

7.    How and when will I know my placement?

Hopefully, a few weeks before the field experience begins,  you will receive a letter which will include a calendar of events for the semester, the name of the school where you’ve been placed and the name of your collaborating teacher.

8.    Is it possible to complete TOSS and student teaching in the same school with the same teacher?

No.  For ECE students a placement in the same school with the same teacher and class limits your teaching experiences and your employment opportunities.  Principals like for their employees to have had a range of experiences.  If you complete TOSS in the intermediate grades (3-5), then you should request placement for Student Teaching in primary grades (K-2)  You may request the same school for TOSS and Student Teaching, just not the same teacher and grade.  The same is true for middle grades and high school.

9.    When will I meet my University Supervisor?

Usually, the University Supervisor sets up a meeting on the day of the Opening Seminar either before the Seminar begins or just after it ends.  The University Supervisor will contact you by email or phone.

10. Is it appropriate for me to contact my collaborating teacher before the first day?

Yes.  An email or handwritten note to the teacher expressing your excitement about your placement is certainly appropriate. You might ask if you could meet before the actual experience begins to chat about the placement.

11.Is it possible to be placed in the same school where my mother is a teacher or my child goes to school?

The OFE will not make such a placement.  The OFE follows the same guidelines that school systems use in employment:

We do not place “relatives” in the same work or attendance environment.  If you are inadvertently placed in a school with a relative, you must immediately notify the OFE.

12.What if I receive a placement that is a long drive for me?

Is it possible to make a change? Generally, when the placement is made, it is final.

13.When is the application packet deadline?

The actual deadline is January 31, 2008.  However, the OFE will be take complete application packets anytime.
