Title: Character Education Partnership
Kennesaw State University (KSU) and the Character Education Partnership in Washington, DC have formed an alliance to administer the State Schools of Character Award (SSOC) in Georgia.  We encourage Georgia schools to enter the SSOC competition.

Each year the Character Education Partnership (CEP) names ten schools and districts as National Schools of Character (NSOC) for their outstanding work in character education. The purpose of the national awards program is to honor the exemplary character education programs of the winners, showcase their work, and give them a platform to inspire others. National winners each receive a grant of up to $10,000 from the John Templeton Foundation to enhance their character education programs and provide outreach to other schools.

We are confident that several schools in Georgia are engaged in quality character education programs that should be shared with others, and this is an outstanding way for them to receive the recognition they deserve.

The Center for Service, Outreach & Partnerships in Bagwell College of Education at KSU is accepting applications from public schools, private schools, and school districts all over the state of Georgia for the SSOC competition, and the state winner(s) will compete to win the national award.

We are very proud that the 2008 Georgia SSOC winner, Gainesville High School, was one of twenty-five finalists in the 2008 national competition, and previous Georgia winners of the National Schools of Character award include:

2001 - Nickajack Elementary School, Cobb County School District, Marietta, GA
2001 - Minnie Burghard Elementary School, Bibb County Schools, Macon, GA
2006 - Centennial Arts Academy, Gainesville City School System, Gainesville, GA
2007 - Skyview Elementary School, Bibb County Schools, Lizella, GA

To be eligible for the 2009 competition, a school must have been actively engaged in character education for a minimum of three full years, starting no later than December 2005.  A school district must have been actively engaged in character education for a minimum of four full years, starting no later than December 2004.  The deadline for submitting an application is December 8, 2008.
