Dr. William D. Impey
Kennesaw State University
1986 - 1995

Dr. William D. Impey served with distinction as a faculty member and administrator at Kennesaw State University. He was truly a servant leader and a model teacher who devoted his life to making the world a better place for others. Dr. Impey was a role model for students, staff, faculty administrators and the Kennesaw State University community. He was a very modest and caring educator who left the university and the world a better place for having made numerous contributions to education.

Dr. Impey was well educated having earned his M.Ed. Degree in Secondary Education from the University of Missouri in l974 and his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Missouri in l979. His education prepared him to serve as a distinguished educator in P-16 schools. Dr. Impey began his career as a seventh (7th) grade Social Studies teacher. During his tenure at Kennesaw State University, Dr. Impey served in the following positions:

Acting Chairperson, Department of Curriculum, and Instruction
Associate Professor of Secondary and Middle Grades
Director of the first Teacher Education Advisement Center

Over the years Dr. Impey was recognized for his outstanding teaching. In l988 he was nominated for the Distinguished Teaching Award at Kennesaw State College. Dr. Impey was a very caring professor who used student centered lessons to facilitate mastery learning on the part of his students. The application of the mastery learning approach was a characteristic that was an integral part of his design of instruction. His commitment to his students not only prevailed in the classroom but also carried over to advisement.

Dr. Impey saw the need to provide students with individual advisement to insure personal and professional guidance. Dr. Impey, with long lines outside his little workroom used as an advisement center, would spend endless time with each and every student to ensure that they left with a tentative program-planning document. It is due to his leadership and the support of Dr. Robert L. Driscoll, the Dean at that time that the Dr. William D. Impey Advisement Center became a reality, thereby, filling a life long dream of Dr. William D. Impey. He was a distinguished teacher, scholar and professional servant but most of all he was a great humanitarian with a commitment to Kennesaw State University and especially its future teachers and educational leaders. William James says that, "The great service of life is to spend it for something that outlasts us." Dr. Impey's legacy will live on through The Advisement Center, its staff and the students to benefit from its services on a daily basis so all continue to celebrate and honor his legacy and to know through The Center he will continue to touch lives today and in the time that we will not see.

"Bill was truly unique…. He was my hero."

Dr. Ann Smith, Associate Dean
Bagwell College of Education
